Good to know. I understand CC uses ATT towers so we'll do well here in FL, but for travel we might have to pick up some short term tracfones.

My inner minimalist wishes I would go back to a "dumb phone" and then data wouldn't be an issue. Probably not gonna happen though unless I seriously tweak my priorities.

Right there with you, I kept one for such a long time and finally gave in to a smartphone. I keep thinking I could go back but, truth be told, having the internet in my palm is so helpful I doubt I would do it.

I've experienced the disappearing data and emailed ST CSV , in about 1 day they sent me a PIN# and a phone # to call for help with the problem.
I was out of my cell range so was waiting to get more bars , sent them another email ,and the problem was fixed the next time I checked in a few days.

Seems that emails get a laminate response to call , and when you call , you go through the usual press this for that and then are on hold till you get someone with a heavy eastern Indian accent reading off a laminate !

(I refer to the laminate response because they always ask the same questions like they are reading off a prepared answer sheet ,,,, probably are .........Try asking to be bumped up to the manager level , that sometimes works well and might even get someone that you can actually understand! )

I guess that is part of the cost of getting a no plan deal way cheaper than Verizon.???

WAY too many companies use this method for customer service these days . Guess there's not much we can do about it . Even if you switch you will probably get the same customer service.
The expense of the hotspot devices with each different carrier can add up too.

Actually there is something to do. Use the online chat support. They worked much better. Voice support is to be avoided. When I used chat they fixed my issues in half the time. Plus I had a written copy of what was said and what was promised. Much nicer and accountable for STRAIGHT TALK.

THX offroad
I saw that option but haven't tried it out.
Will be #1 on next problem . ;)

After several days, I got an email from Straight Talk claiming they had updated my account and I did indeed still have 3.8GB left and expiration of August 18, 2015.   Unfortunately my device still will not work and sends me to datareplenish.com with a message that I need to buy another data card.

I spend 40 minutes in online chat and after the guy was unable to figure out anything, he directed me to call customer service and gave me a PIN.   I then spent 35 minutes with a lady from India, who had me hardware reset the device, power cycle it several times, all of which did nothing to help.   I think she finally hung up on me or the call was disconnected.

The problem has to be the 60 day data cards are not working past 30 days.

Straight Talk is straight garbage.   I am going to try and return this to Walmart even though it has been more than 14 days.   If that doesn't work, I am going to try and do a chargeback.

I should have listened to the people who said Straight Talk sucked.

Do any of the ST phones work well as hotspots?
Read the fine print on any ST phone pkg. They explicitly prohibit tethering a ST phone to any other device. I tried to DL an app on mu ST phone that would overwrite the ST programing, but had no luck. Search the web, and you'll find plent of folks who's phone where shut off due to tethering.

You have 3g of data a month for $45, you should be able to use you data as you see fit right? Not ST! Imagine having them tell you who can and who you can't call with voice [emoji53]

If they allow tethering, then thier handy dandy lil portable hotspot would be obsolete. As soon as I get paid on Monday, I'm tossing this ST phone into the river and running to Cricket. They have 3 times the data allowed and "zero" restrictions on tehering. [emoji41]

I don't know about cricket. How is their coverage nation wide? ST has worked everywhere I have been so far. I am in need of a newer/better phone now though. Mine is almost 6 years old and now the battery won't hold a charge.

I hear Att bought out Cricket. I've had spotty data in rual areas with Att in the past, but voice has been good. YMMV

I hear ST uses various towers in different parts of the country. Since they don't own their towers, its who ever had the cheapest rates. They buy data in huge quantities from Verizon and Att. My area uses Verizon. Excellent data even up in the redwood Forrests. Att has excellent data strength in larger citied. I'll trade spotty data for larger amounts if it. I get laid over a bit as a longhaul trucker. Wifi at the truck stops sucks!

With ST, the towers you use depends on the type of phone you have. A CDMA phone will either be on Verizon or Sprint (different models use different towers). GSM phones use AT&T towers. The easiest way to tell is by the model #. A model that ends in a C is CDMA and G is for GSM.

Don't forget to set up VOICE MAIL if you go straight talk. I just converted and activated it. At one time voicemail did not work on ST but now it does. You can also use GOOGLE VOICE for voicemail which gets you a text message conversion of the voicemail. It's not that great but might help some improve connections as text gets through easier than voice or data.
