Make rice with my rice cooker

Good one! A free energy source should not be wasted, and since my tribe is mostly Asian we go through a lot of rice!

I'd like to find a 'food thermos' to keep the rice hot and soft for as long as possible after cooking. Ideally holding up to a gallon or so.

I've got a Yeti Rambler 64 oz and it keeps liquids cold or hot for quite a while.

I see them on ebay for around $40 for the older style like the one I have.

Thanks, that shape looks good for soup or even a soupy stew,

but doesn't look like it would work for solids like cooked rice.

Yeah I was thinking more along the lines of rice in a water base with oil or whatever...making it easy to pour.

The opening on my Rambler is about 2.5 inches across....possibly too small to scoop or pour cooked rice into.

Off topic, so back to 'dumping loads'...

:p

I have this-I threw away another empty propane can today, and with this, though not as fast as a pressure cooker is good for a lot of things and stretches out propane use. I have the smaller one since its just me. I can't insert the photo for some reason. Mine is pink.

Now we're cooking with gas

"Thermal cooker" seems the keywords, add "-thermos" in your search for the less expensive stuff.

New deep rabbit hole to dive down, thanks!

And actually perfectly on topic, anything that helps "time-shift" energy usage can make use of this excess / free energy.

Not just solar but "while you're at it" energy-hungry tasks while the genny's running.

Principle behind "charging up" cold eutectic plates for a fridge/freezer, compressor may run just as long per 24 hours, just does it much less frequently, at times you can control.

Idea: custom-make a very well insulated air-tight container to perfectly fit the inside pot of a rice cooker / crockpot / pressure/slow cooker

Used for storage, fill up with stuff when not in use, maybe even build in as galley / chuckbox compartment!

I had one of those 2" thick styrofoam boxes that are used to mail frozen foods that I used as a hay box. My stock pot fit in it perfectly. Alas, the box disappeared sometime in one of the last few years moves. But now I just wrap my stockpot in a sleeping bag.

I haven't tried wrapping my rice cooker insert in a quilt or bag, but seems like it would work just fine. Just use one of those stretchable silicone lids to cover the insert, wrap it in an insulated cozy, and maybe drop the whole thing in a suitable cardboard box.

I'm sure those commercial thermal cookers work just fine, but they seem too spendy and single-purpose to me.

If I make a pot of rice at 2pm, and want to serve it at 8pm, would it still be steaming hot just using a bag?

For context, here's the thread Bob felt I was derailing: https://vanlivingforum.com/showthread.php?tid=27155

Pretty easy to make a box with polyiso panels and gorilla glue. Making it nice looking is a bit more of a challenge.

Would be multi-use, ice chest cooler, storage as well.
