Sorting It All Out ::: Mobile Internet Devices & Apps to Go!

Hi Guys,&nbsp; The bank has not thrown me out yet so I'm still researching and planning!&nbsp; <br>I would like to know more about:<br>1.&nbsp; Tab Casting, particularly Google Chromecasting?<br><br>2.&nbsp; Carriers:&nbsp; I have an old 3G Apple iPhone with AT&amp;T<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; -&gt;&nbsp; I like the ASUS products particularly the Nexus 7 and realize I will have to switch<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; to an Android device to do the things I will want to do.&nbsp; (just dump the iPhone?)<br><br>3.&nbsp; Dash mounted GPS: With Nexus 7?&nbsp; (leaning that way..)<br><br>4.&nbsp; Getting mobile Internet with <span id="post_message_1278449650">Foxfi/PdaNet app: what it is, how it works, where to get it<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &amp; what carrier I need to receive it?<br><br>5.&nbsp; I know that I want a strong Internet connection (mobile broadband?)<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and I know that I want the best GPS app and I also know that I want my Netflix!<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I am currently a DirecTV customer and can continue that? (good idea/have a better idea?)<br><br>What I do know is that at this point, I have no idea what I know! <img src="/images/boards/smilies/confused.gif" class="emoticon bbc_img">&nbsp; So I'll be open to any and all info.<br>This is fun stuff and should really help me with the very serious "stick &amp; brick" to "Fiver"<br>transformational jitters I am currently experiencing.<br></span>

There isn't a magic cheap solution to mobile Internet.<br><br>You are basically down to 2 options:<br><br>1) WiFi from various free places, you can buy extender things, and stronger radios and antennas to really help with this.<br><br>2) Pay loads of money to some provider. in the USA, Verizon is the de-facto winner for getting decent signal in out of the way places(i.e. away from large cities).<br><br>3) do the giantly large satellite dish thing for Internet. &nbsp;Apparently Dish does this relatively cheaply now, but the giant dish probably makes it unfeasible for most of us.<br><br>Doing things like TV, Movies, etc over the Internet only works if you don't have limits to the amount of data you can transfer, if you are on option #2, then you are pretty much guaranteed to have a limit, so don't bother trying. &nbsp;<br><br>Phones as GPS devices work really well, for the most part. I use an iPad Mini with Cellular built in, it works great 99% of the time. &nbsp;It's not so great once you get out into State, National Forest or BLM land, since electronic versions of those maps are scarce.<br><br>As for Google/Android vs Iphone/iOS device. &nbsp;Use what your friends have, particularly your more technology minded friends. &nbsp;Same with the Windows vs Mac debate. &nbsp;They both work fine, they both do essentially the same things. &nbsp;So either use what your friends have or strike out alone, and do what feels right for you. &nbsp;Otherwise it's just an endless debate. I personally use iOS on an iPad mini with Verizon service.<br><br>With Love,<br>Tara

Hi Tara &amp; thanks so much for that gracious and informative response.<br>From my current perspective, one could predict my "rapid fire" load of questions but the fact is,<br>I'm not out there yet so as you say, I'll figure it out a little at a time along with everything else<br>found withing the realm of "transition" when beginning full timing.<br><br>I'm an Internet junkie no doubt so I will quickly sort it out after the fact.<br>I really like ASUS because I've built and repaired many home towers and found them<br>everywhere in most home rigs.&nbsp; Motherboards in particular and that is a biggy.<br>I'll probably pick up the Nexus 7 for GPS in my tow vehicle and something from <br>them for a notebook as well.&nbsp; So many folks want to sell us these devices, difficult<br>to choose sometimes.&nbsp; I have found lots of reviews and sites with their "top 10" best<br>and worst format so I'll just see what fits my needs.&nbsp; I see there is a solar chargable<br>laptop and a convertable that disconnects the keyboard leaving what appears to be<br>a huge iPad.<br>I also fly in the Microsoft Flight Simulator X but the online part of that game is shut<br>down right now.&nbsp; That's it for gaming for me.&nbsp; So basically, I want the best overall<br>GPS and to work on my book and web sites.&nbsp; Thanks again,&nbsp; Morgan
