So, I guess I will post here now..
With the sale of the G30 van (Hank)  and the trade of the minivan (Just.Not.Me)
I wound up with this guy-  Meet BigRed  1992 4x4 GMC 2500
BigRed.jpg

PO is an ASE-Mechanic and did a BUNCH of work, including a properly wired in aux battery in engine compartment.  He intended on using Red as a work/camping truck, but wife had a 2nd baby, and that changed the family transportation dynamic...so we did a fair trade. :shy:
Now I need to campify him.  I have some ideas on how to put my cot in, around the wheel well, without cutting the cot legs..  And building a bulkhead against the cab for house batteries and water and such..
And I believe I can use the rack mount I got for the minivan, which I kept, on the canopy to mount solar, because it is a generic flat-mount style.  It is an ARE canopy with "insulation" - aka carpet.
Red is old enough that no one should look at him much.  Not too shiny, but well kept.

It is what is 'inside the paint' that matters.  :)   This is the list...  basically I have a "new" 1992 truck. LOL

Pitman arm was replaced and the vehicle was aligned, at the time the shocks were also replaced.
Front and rear brakes were done less then 3000 miles ago. New rotors and pads in front and drums, shoes, wheel cylinders and axle seals with a rear diff service for the rear.
Transfer case and front diff were serviced 5000 miles ago t-case with synthetic fluid.
Exhaust is 3" to the muffler with dual pipes out the back with come tips
After market wheels 17" and 265/70/17 tires with about 70%
Heavy duty towing package, grill guard, and taillight guards. New headlights turn signals and grill with headlight high/low conversion relay (highs and lows stay on with high beams) wired for fog lights.

So far, my plan is to put the bed down the passenger side. Build a box- forward of the wheel well, to put the house batteries in, with a hinged lid for access to wiring, and a handy 'shelf' at the head of the bed. Foot of bed box for camp stove, etc.. Then bed up against that, so I don't have to cut the legs of my cot due to wheel well. Using the forward most board mount in the bed, make a bulkhead at the front (cab) end for water storage. Weight = Movement during sudden maneuvers.
OH- and I have a handful of those screw-snaps.. figure i will put a few into the windows for curtains.
Still should have plenty of space for myself and the two canines..

Any Brilliant ideas are welcome- of course. :)

congrats, I have been waiting for you to post it here. almost sent you a PM asking why you haven't posted it. I will try to get some pics about covering the side windows on the shell. highdesertranger

Thanks man!
Yeah, I've been a little brain-sprained lately. Lots going on and stuff and things.. you know. ;)
And I wanted to wait until I had gotten to know the truck a Little better and formed at least an embryonic plan for camping...

I'm just speechless with envy !
...................................................................
You're quite the horse trader !
Your interior plan sounds good !
Many happy trails to you and the poochies !

RVPopyey- caught that did ya? ;)

My next trick is to try to figure out what/how to attach solar. I think it will be on the canopy, if it can take it.. (not the weight, but the 'lift' when driving)
And to get the canopy as weather tight (Rain.. ugh) as I can.

How about a roofrack of somesorts that would provide shade and a place to mount your solar panel ?
Just shooting some ideas at you.
Good luck
Btw Nice truck

After swinging that deal , I'm surprised the previous owner isn't installing the solar for you

Gary68 : a slide in would be nice, but this is a short bed - set up more for towing than hauling..
Mobile sport : I reserved the rack I got for the minivan.. It is a drill-through, flat mount style. I think it will be compatible? Worth a try.
Rvpopeye : LOL

Nice truck. While I love my cargo trailer, I still wish I had an empty truck with a topper for short trips and to more remote areas than I want to take my trailer. My current truck has a topper, but is way to full of multiple layers of tools to sleep in anymore. Those ARE fiberglass toppers are about as good as they come - I had one for my last truck for when I didn't have the pop up camper on it. I think you're going to be happy with this rig for quite a while.

got a seal kit for the canopy, and one for the tailgate, yesterday. I know a project for this weekend..
I also got a lot of measurements of the bed and canopy to work with.

I've driven this truck for about a week now, and feel totally safe and comfortable in it. (another reason I didn't like the minivan.. felt like a 'target' in traffic)

I wonder about replacing the fabric screen - has a few holes in it...- with real aluminum screen in the canopy..?
I don't think it would be a weight issue. lol

also- thinking about the canopy- I guess I can unclamp it and lift it up onto a couple 2x4s on the bed rails to work on it.. I don't necessarily have enough bodies to lift it off and flip it over.. lol

But I do have a Jerry's not too far away.. And I LOVE their scrap bin/s.. :)

Not sure how I will haul the wood home tho... Oh wait- I have a TRUCK! LOL

Got the canopy re-sealed.  Woo!  That was "fun"
Also coated the tailgate with bed liner stuff so the dogs have traction when they jump up. :)
And graphed out something of a plan for the bed interior build.

Snooped around under the hood some.  Discovered my truck is brilliant!
It has a factory retractable work light under the hood, on the passenger side.
And it works!  Now I just need to get the fog lights on the pusher working.

Last night nature gave me a free weatherstripping installation check! :) It rained
So this morning, after the sun comes up, I will go see how I did. lol
I know there are a few spots, at the tailgate, that still have gaps. But they are mostly vertical and shrouded by framework. I figure- as long as those gaps don't leak water- they are a bit of passive fresh air exchange.

There's a very good chance that the square back end will cause a low pressure area behind your truck as you drive down the road.  I would expect a lot of dust to be sucked in to the back of your truck via those gaps.

OP is right. on dirt roads a lot of dust will be sucked in. they used to make a seal kit for the tail gate. I have not looked for one recently. highdesertranger

:)
Already have 1/2 the seal in hand. Was letting the bed-spray cure well before trying to adhere.
And I will consider the side seal kit too.. Thanks guys, for confirming my suspicions. :)

Yep, I just got back from a trip to Utah and there is a lot of dust at the back end of my bed. It all sucked up through the bottom of the tailgate while driving dirt roads. I have the same thing happen with water when driving in heavy rain.

This is why I got a doodad called a RokBlock. Essentially a relatively inexpensive piece of innertube rubber with VHB strips down both edges. Goes, one side on tailgate, other side on truck bed. Like a gasket. There will still be the small gaps around the tailgate latch, but this should reduce the 'suck factor' by a significant amount. :)
Actually installing it today.
(had to wait for torrential summer rain to stop..)
