Free app for daily check-ins. This looks like a good idea for nomads camping alone. https://snugsafe.com/#howitworks

From the website:

  1. Users sign up by providing their name and address, then choosing their emergency contacts and daily check in time.
  2. Snug pings the user at their chosen time every day, prompting them to visit the app to “check in.”
  3. When the user checks in, they receive an inspirational Quote of the Day and the 24 hour timer resets. If the user does not check in, Snug initiates an alert to make sure that they are ok:
  4. For users on the free plan, Snug will send each of your emergency contacts a text message saying that you have missed your check-in.
  5. For users on the Snug Dispatch plan, a Snug dispatcher will call your cell phone and ask if you are alright.  If you do not pick up, they will leave a voicemail with a callback number. They will then proceed to call every one of your contacts, in order. If you have not checked-in by 8:15 and the dispatcher does not have confirmation that you are okay, or that one of your emergency contacts will check on you, they will dispatch a wellness check to your last known location.

This sounds very worthwhile.

What sort of permissions are they asking for? That's the killer for me on so many "free" apps. They want your contact list, to track you, etc.

That is going to be very problematic for someone who is out wandering around. Cellular service might not always be available on a daily basis. Cell phone batteries can go down because people forget to charge them or they forget to turn them off in areas of spotty reception so the constant signal seeking runs the battery down quickly.

It is fine if you are living in an RV park or always located where there is a strong signal. But when out driving from one location to another how can you guarantee you will be able to call in at a scheduled time? Why would you want to waste the time of an emergency crew who showed up at a place you used to be looking for someone in distress?

So I am sorry but I see way too many pitfalls in this system for someone who is driving around camping at different locations. Fine for sticks and bricks or maybe an LTVA camper.
