Has anyone ever  tried being a RV transport driver?

I can't/don't drive due to  diabetes retinopathy  but I have a dream to travel around the USA in my RV. NO,I am not looking for a driver now but in the future,I want to hire a driver.

I was an equipment transport driver for a time which also included the boss's RV but this wasn't the kind of set up you may be looking for.  His RV was driven wherever and then he flew in, we stayed at local motels until he was done then drove it back.  I was not hauling passengers.

The main things you'll have to consider is that wherever you want to go the driver will be there, all the time, 24/7.  Transportation companies usually put their drivers up in motels but you are paying the charges for that and usually some kind of meal per diem as well.

Also, you'll want a background check on any potential driver.  If you lease a driver(big bucks there) everything will be included in the cost except for extras like motels and meals in case of a break down or if that allowance has to be extended waiting for repairs.  You'll also want someone with a clean driving record.

If you are looking for a civilian type driver you must be very clear on what their "job description" ends up being.  Talk with potentials and get some ideas so you can draw up a contract that both are agreeable to.  Unless you know them get character references and again, background check.  I can't recommend that enough.  If they balk at having one done then you don't want them in your personal space or as your driver.  Make sure they provide you with an original copy of their driving record no more than 48 hours old.  If you do this but don't leave right away, say a month later, get a new fresh one.

Safety first.  I am very much a stickler about road safety but for your situation you have to be just as diligent about personal safety as well.  Now if you have a friend, neighbor or family member you know well that can share the dream with you well there you go!

Interesting idea, if you found a van or RV dweller, or even a small group of dwellers with similar travel plans, and you had a small travel trailer, you could "hitch your wagon" to them so to speak. Covering or splitting expenses would make it worth while, afford each party a level of privacy, etc.

I'd want a backup plan in this case, a place to go "home" to if things went south, like a sticks and bricks or a year-round RV lot at the ready. In the worst case scenario, you could have the RV transported for you by a transport company and take normal transportation Greyhound etc back to "home base."

I wonder if you could find someone on one of those house-sitting sites. Lots of house sitters the jobs to have a free place to stay for a while while traveling. Seems like they'd be the sort interested in driving you for a period in exchange for a free place to stay (the RV) and the chance to travel free. Hell, if I weren't already set up and happily on the road, I'd jump on it.

The one I knew delivered new units to the dealers.

I actually looked into this out of curiosity and had one of the largest of these companies send me details and an application. Based on the terms of their contract, I honestly don't see how anyone could actually net any money at all out of the deal. I was shocked.

I would think that finding someone who meets all the important criteria of safety, responsibility, drug-free, criminal background, etc...would end up being expensive. Perhaps finding a like-minded individual and approaching it as a collaborative journey might be a more economical way to go...

I'm going to take an opposite view on this. With 320 million people in this country, I think you could find someone that would fit your needs. There are lots of people retired or otherwise that don't need to make much money but rather be doing something, rather than just sitting around. I think there are people out there that would agree to do this for a set weekly amount.

For the right person it could be the ideal job. Make a few bucks and get to tour the country in an RV. If this is your dream, I'd work on making it happen whenever you're ready and the time feels right.

Me too ,I'd be up for a trip or two , if I didn't have to take care of my mom !

Just a thought. You might want to find someone that knows how to cook for a diabetic person and able to drive an RV and knows the ins and outs of working on an RV.

Hoepfully in 4 years,I can find a female RV driver or I'll just give up on my RV traveling dream and traveling dream period. I know it's going to be hard. Who wants to travel with a 40's something lady with chihuahuas.
