In season here in north Florida, we can wade the shoreline and gather real scallops (many in restaurants aren't from shellfish) and gig flounders. No boat needed.
The quail here tend to be small.
Rabbits aren't rodents, but close enough. Tasty too! Tyndall AFB, near Panama City, used to serve farmed rabbit. Hard to find in the wild since the coyotes run rampant.

Sorry. Rabbits are rodents.
grew up on hasenfeffer (spl) in winter.

I worked in a plant in Corpus Cristi punching "bay scallops" from ray fins.
the wild scallops here are deep sea catches with dredges. The dead ones wash up sometimes after a storm. The crew goes out for a week or more and shuck them on the boat keeping only the muscle that hold the shell closed. The orientals like and pay premium for the complete & live ones. Scallops have blue eyes. Scallops swim very fast.

According to wiki.......

"Rabbits are small mammals in the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha".

NOT rodentia.

"Differences between Lagomorphs and other mammals[edit]

Lagomorphs differ from rodents in that they have four incisors in the upper jaw (not two, as in the Rodentia) and they are almost strictly herbivorous, unlike rodents, many of which will eat both meat and vegetable matter. However, they resemble rodents in that their incisor teeth grow continuously throughout their lives, thus necessitating constant chewing on fibrous food to prevent the teeth from growing too long.[6][7] The two pairs of incisors are an advanced trait."

I stand corrected. They are merely rodent-like lagomorphia. they must have created that order after I finished school.:)
They are still tastier than rats.

Nothing better than squirrel on a stick!

as I said, they do have a meaty tasty tail. I am a bit to far north for great quantities. But we do have fun.

Wha'chu talkin' bout Zil? Just because they call them "MudBugs"? They get eaten by the ton around here!
Guy

Do y'all suck the heads? Likely a Cajun thing. I like the Mudbugs, but only the meaty bits. :D

Suck the heads. nope. We clean the blue crabs as well. no guts. even they are what they eat. Unless I'm drunk.
I even put the clams in salted water with a little corn meal to let them purge for a few hours.

What a wonderful thread. Had me laughing out loud.

I've planted rose bushes in my yard to have the deer come in to graze - they are tasty, prolific breeders with no predators, and will let me get within 6 feet of them while stripping my rose bushes. They are practically tame.

Most of the critters here have no predators to keep them in check, no grazing lands because we build homes and fenced off their access, so they don't stay healthy or get enough to eat. Raccoons and possums are out of control also.
