Appears a storm, potentially to rival the famed Columbus Day Storm, is brewing off the west coast.  It has all the same ingredients and the timing.  Massive wind/rain potential.

Get inland- ya coasties!  And get to cover, Nail your stuff down, head for the high ground, and get out from under the trees...

Be safe people!

Yeah, it's aimed straight at us. The last Wunderground report is estimating up to 80 mph wind. Everyone is battening down the hatches and keeping our fingers crossed that they're overestimating.

They have scaled it back slightly- to 20-30 winds and 75-80 gusts in the Valley --yikes
Along with Hurricane force winds on the coast.

Get somewhere safe today-Friday- while you can!
Saturday is going to be 'interesting'
And stay out of the low areas -what with all this rain.

Friday 4AM SW corner of Oregon
So far so good... It was a bit nasty to be wandering around outdoors yesterday afternoon/evening but not even close to the Columbus Day storm. Camp trailer is still where it's been parked and the power hasn't failed. I remember the Columbus Day storm well... School cancelled, no power for a few days, cooking on the Coleman and learning how to play cribbage by lamplight.

All is good here in the Portland area, except that the pond is overflowing...hope my fish don't end up in the yard.

just a monsoon that spawned a tornado that's giving way to a typhoon

i demand Wolf Blitzer on the coast right now! the president to speak, where's Anderson Cooper warning me?

i'm sensing power outage, hope its back on for football

Weather is chasing me, snowing on the Alcan, I just missed it all by a day or two. I arrived in Seattle this morning. Dropped of my passenger at the greyhound station and headed east with alacrity. It's dry and sunny on the other side of Snoqualmie pass. Hopefully the weather stops in Seattle.

I've had all of the Oregon winter weather I can handle for a lifetime--I'm heading south!!

I'm just outside Winnemucca NV now and will be in Pahrump tomorrow. Anybody in the area my camp will be open to you! i'll be there for at least 10-14 days.

aww Bob, ya baby..  running from a little weather..    just kidding
Hey, I was out walking and playing with my 2 dogs in this weather..
Wishing we could run from it too... getting tired of mud. LOL

They say Saturday will be the most 'fun' with all the rain we have had in a short period of time, and wind coming, and trees still having most of their leaves... Mostly trees and power outtages- methinks.

I am taking Red to the local underside-shop for a spiffy new set of gas shocks Sat morning.  :)
Other than that- I will be safe and snug with the dogs.

Be careful out there folks!

The famous Columbus Day Storm of 1962 was described as "a contender for the title of most powerful extratropical cyclone recorded in the U.S. in the 20th century..." with wind gusts from 145 to 160 mph (only measured where the equipment wasn't blown away).  Many animals were crushed under collapsed barns, high-voltage towers knocked over, kids trapped overnight in dark schools, weeks w/o power.

It's calm now -- supposed to start this afternoon.  Not many people on the road around here.  I had to take an elderly friend to Safeway yesterday, and all of the checkstands were open, and there was a line at each one:  heavy on the bottled water, Dinty Moore stew, cat and dog food, diapers, bread and beer.

Yesterday, some radio guy was talking to what sounded like a meteorologist, and he was saying that they simply don't know how bad it's going to be.  Encouraging.

Who knows?  I may end up living in a van sooner than I expected...... :dodgy:

My brother in Crescent City just contacted me....

76mph at Cape Blanco
7 1/2" of rain
2" more expected today
Netflix marathon at his house until the power goes out.

DH and I are tucked in and watching the trees begin to sway.

In the middle of the Columbus Day storm, I was on a Greyhound bus riding up the Willamette Valley to Portland for a visit with my dad and his family. I sat behind the driver and screamed with excitement and fear when he took his turn dashing under a live wire swinging madly across Highway 99.

The old bus depot in Portland was cave dark and packed with people and suitcases and flickering lighters. My dad found me when we bumped into each other by chance. I said excuse me and he recognized my voice.

Most of the trees on his property came down on and around the house. During the days, we kids hauled and stacked branches for bonfires and generally horsed around and dragged mud into the house. Nights we gathered in front of the big brick fireplace, cooking, eating, playing games, sleeping.

Best visit ever.

So much for accurate weather predictions... This one was a bust.

It rained less than 1/4", and I doubt that the wind went over 12 mph. Maybe Seattle is getting more.

I tried living at Astoria, Or but the gray, drab days didn't work for me.

It was cool enough for me at Flagstaff and when the rains began I was cold. Slept with a heavy blanket and ran heat mornings.
Glad to be back in the desert also.
We can sleep with the back doors open and a light cover.

I seem to have survived the storm on the Oregon Coast. (Yachats/Florence) One tree down on a road Friday that delayed some work a couple of hours. Now that my summer job is over (last day yesterday) I'll be heading south for the winter.

Watch out Bob -- some years Medford gets several inches of funny white stuff on the ground, and this can last for a week or more.

I am so ready to NOT deal with the cold and snow in the winter. Michigan seemed like it turned gray in October and stayed that way until May. Colorado can be milder and sunny but at some point there is always 20 below temps and lots of snow. I don't care if I bundle up or not, that cold kills my back anymore.
