It's a wine.  Loudest when  accelerating, pitch changes and quites when shifting, no sound when not in gear, quites when not accelerating.   Sounds like it coming from rear end.  As loud and similar to a Ford power steering unit... It's a 4 speed with over drive. Year 2000
Thanks

it could be gear lash, I'm unfortunately not all that well versed with rear end, hopefully HDR chimes in
Is there any reason it might have started this? rear end serviced recently? is the oil level in the rear end OK? is it a limited slip rear end?
do check the posts TWIH posted, they might shed some light

It's a van I'm looking at buying.   Just did carfaxcarfax.   Left rear accident.  Total loss reported.   It's been driven 6000 miles since accaccident.  Has 66k on . Ugh.  He's asking 4200.  Tidle is not salvaged

Left rear accident. Total loss reported.

I'd be very leery of that. If it's fixed right, why sell it 6k later?
i'd either have a GOOD mechanic look it over, or pursue other options

Yeah I'm passing on it.  Probably has bent frame or something.   2 owners in that last 6k miles... thanks for the quick responses .

yeah sounds like the rear end. the only thing you can do for it is rebuild it. I m confused, how could it be totaled and not have a salvaged title? highdesertranger

'Totalled' only means that the insurance estimate for repairs exceeded the insurance companies valuation of the vehicle.

Not all jurisdictions issue a 'salvage title'.

I had a GMC Safari 'totalled' by the insurance company - they insisted that the repairs were $2900. on a vehicle that they claimed was worth only $2,500.

It had a shattered windshield, needed a drivers' side mirror replaced and body work to one side of the vehicle.

I took their money (less the $100.00 scrap value they insisted on) and essentially bought the vehicle back from them. The title itself never changed. I repaired the van through my own body shop and a trip to the auto glass shop for a total of $1,900. and then drove it for another 2 1/2 years.

A replacement rear axle cost $1.900 for a 3500 just a few months ago, ask me how I know.

I also had a car totaled by insurance company, for side swipe damage, no damage to the drivetrain, just body damage on the passenger side. I bought it for $1500. Got $2500 for insurance, then sold it for $1200. It was my first car, so the numbers always stuck with me. At 16, it was like hitting the lottery. My title never changed to a salvage title.

When the stator inside of the torque converter fails it makes a whining noise like a power steering pump low on fluid. Under a load the tranny will also run hot.
