Hi....
I am in Van for a few days and decided to save myself $450 for 3 nights at the Holiday inn. I am working 12 hour shifts so I just parked in the UBC area where all you can see are signs saying "no overnight parking ".
If you come into UBC on 14th ave, just past the golf course but before the McDonalds, on the left there's a church with plenty of parking behind it. It doesn't say no parking and I was not hassled. Plus it's only $2 to swim at the UBC Aquatic center after 6. (Great private showers)
Hope this helps someone.
