I have a friend at work selling a 1995 Chevy Starcraft conversion van
The body is in very nice condition. Interior needs a good cleaning , carpets , etc.
it has 204,000 on it. I don' t see many leaks underneath. Just a little oil on the oil pan.
Tranny fluid looks clean no burn smells. Tires new.
West coast vehicle so no rust underneath.

Would this be a good deal for around $1700 ?

I will be taking a test drive in a couple days. What else should I be looking for on the inspection.

I want to do a camper conversion on it.

Thanks for any help.

At that price point anything is good. Just have your friend go with you to Motor vehicle (DMV) to register it; before you accept ownership. Likely you will need a safety inspection on it before it can be sold. That will point out all the issues that will need fixing before you can register it. Also check online for an insurance quote with Geico (free quotes).

Figure you might need $2000 to $5000 ready, post sale for anything that goes wrong.

Hightop, shorty, regular body or astro?

All questions you want to know.

It sucks to put a lot in a van and find out it is to low or short for you.

Price is right for that year, so you could have found a van.

I'd want to know what engine and transmission it had so I can google how reliable they are with that kind of mileage.

I'd also want to know how well it's been maintained with that kind of high mileage.

And for me personally, because I no longer do any kind of maintenance or repairs myself, that's just too many miles.

The van is a Chevy 2500 Starcraft hightop conversion. 5.7 motor.

Get it!  (I WANT IT!!!)  Good find,

You'll know exactly what you will be doing for the next while.

Bump.

So what did you decide? For that price unless it was a real dog you should have been ok. 204K is a lot on those old gen motors but if not abused you could still get a few years out of it. Was it worth the money? What are your plans? If you did t get it, what are you looking at or what did you find instead?

Hi when I bought my 79 Dodge camper van I got receipts that the transmission had been serviced over the years.I think the condition of the transmission is very important.Take it up and down some hills and see if you are satisfied with the shifting

I decided to look for a newer Express van. The G20 dipped when braking and didn't care for the older captains chairs and the leg room. Gas pedal very close to brake pedal and engine cover.
Other the that the body is in great shape. My friend still has it. Didn't see any leaks. But was worried about the 204k miles. Van came from Idaho, maybe a lot of highway miles.
