My oil light came on a couple of weeks ago, so I checked it, oil level a bit low so I topped it off and did an oil/filter change the next day. The light still came on for about 30 seconds every time I started it.

Today I learned it is an automatic maintenance thing on many vehicles. You turn the key to ON, but don't start it, push the accelerator 3 times clear to the floor in 5 seconds and it resets. I'll probably find out I'm the only person on this forum that didn't know this.

I only read about it a couple of days ago, so you weren't the only one. Of course, the newest vehicle I've owned is a 2003. :)

IIRC on the ford F250 I drove fore work, reseting the oil change was hidden on one of the menus. The chevy of about the same age always complained of washer fluid low, and had to constantly have a button pushed to get the odometer instead. (apparently a common failure of a sensor)

I have tried these quick&dirty idiot light clearing methods before, and never got it to work. One reason I got the code reader. Easier to clear lights.
Never had the oil light come on unless oil was very low.

2006 Chevy HHR is done completely from the steering wheel controls. quick and simple.

This is why I long for days gone by where an actual oil pressure gauge was installed. If it was reading low or zero pressure, you knew you had a problem. Nothing to reset.
I had an Oldsmobile Aurora that relied heavily on an onboard computer. It was constantly telling to check my tire pressure, and every time I did, they were fine.
I like computers for personal use, but in an automobile? Not so much. :dodgy:

My 3/4 ton '07 Chevrolet Express has a factory oil pressure gauge.

I know some of the Toyota's the reset is hold down the mileage trip on "A" and turn the key to on. The mileage will flash down to 0 and you good for 5,000 more miles.

:) on my 87, I have to find the little box, push a reset tab, and replace the 9 volt battery. This is to reset the EGR light.
