Meh, in general cities tend to be more expensive than countryside, and touristy areas tend to be more expensive than non-touristy. That's pretty much true wherever you are.

In traveling around the country, it all tends to even out.

Dallas and Houston didn't strike me as particularly "cheap" either.
 
This is one advantage of having a minivan. Wherever you go, it's just one more minivan on the street. But yeah, overall, supplies and groceries are expensive in the NE.
