Someone has come up with model-specific adapters to compensate for the ridges on van roofs.

"Patent Pending adapter matches the contour of the OEM roof so a standard RV style vent mounts to a flat surface.  Prevents distorting the roof sheet metal or vent flange and can be used as an aid for locating the fan. They are CNC machined out of UV and fire resistant expanded PVC. The fan mounts to the outside adapter.  Fan adapters work with the Maxxfan Deluxe series and the Fan-tastic Vent fans."

I recommend Impact products all the time......Hein is a member here (altho very quiet)

He peddles the THINSULATE that is used for van insulation besides the CNC stuff

They have a very nice Ebay store with interesting products. I will have to do some more research on the Fiamma table brackets to see what systems they are used with. Fiamma does make some very nice RV products, many of which it is difficult to find other than in Europe or Australia.

If I use this adapter on the outside roof, will I still need some type of frame on the interior side of the vent opening?

you should still make a wood frame inside. this gives the screws something to bite into. it also gives whatever type of ceiling you have something to tie into. the trim hides everything. highdesertranger

The eBay listing mentions "framing strips."

"The framing strips are expanded PVC and bonded to the roof with a thick bead of Windoweld. They are more flexible than wood and plenty strong to support the vent and keep it from jiggling. We double them up when installing roof top air conditioners. They are essential if the span between the OEM roof beams is more than 18". They also provide a backing for the screws that hold up the vent interior bezel. They should be placed 1/4" away from the edge of the hole so the screws for the vent go into the strips."

You could probably accomplish the same thing with 1x2 lumber.

I didn't use anything internal on my vent. The bottom trim ring is screwed to the luan ceiling panel which is screwed to the van's ceiling ribs. There's foam board insulation between. It has worked fine for seven years..
