welcome! Im one of the youngns too. It is intimidating, ive been vandwelling over 2 years but in one place with a steady job. Now im hitting the road end of this month. Money and mechanical issues are what scare me the most, but hey fear shouldnt hold us back! Massage seems like a pretty nice way to get some cash. Maybe make up a sign with magnets you can stick on your forerunner :)

Old dude here.................lol.................Welcome! You have come to the right place!

I wouldn't be advertising, on the side of your van. Most states require state licensure  to practice massage therapy. Massage requires state to state certification, health permits and a business license. Advertising on your van could bring unwanted attention.

Welcome, look forward to following your adventures. All the best

Back in the mid 90's, One summer, I mostly slept in a Nissan Pathfinder with a couple of surfboards while I travelled from west to east and back west again. Summer of 95 was epic for tropical swells. I drove from NJ to OBX like 7 times that summer and early fall.

It was less than Ideal as far as sleeping went. A few years Later on I travelled overseas, with my surfboards, and got a VW Kombi IN South Africa, and fell in love with Van dwelling. In Australia I had a Sedan, whose front seat I often slept in, But in NewZealand I had another Van, a small Nissan van but with a full size bed.

A Suv and 4wd is great, but a full size bed in a Van/Minivan, is better if that vehicle choice is not set in stone.

I hope you can take advantage of your desires for ultimate freedom. If you make it to the RTR, ~ 7 hours further west is San Diego North County.

We should have many good swells this winter for a wave rider, and nothing like some salt water to clean out the sinuses after some desert camping.

Wishing you well.

Hi Lauren,

My name is Julie, I live in Iowa, I’m 54 and single. I’m also a newcomer and just discovered this web site about a month ago, so I’m afraid I can’t give you any advice at this point. But I can relate to so much of what you wrote and wanted to reply.

It sounds like you’ve thought things through pretty well, and I think your plan is a good one. Even though I don’t know enough to give you advice, I want to offer you my support in what you’re doing. I think you are very courageous and have good common sense, so I believe you will be able to create the kind of life you desire.

I’ve been thinking about living and traveling in a van for quite a while, but especially in the last few months. I own my home, which is a good thing, but it’s become such a burden. I spent almost this entire past summer working on my house…..reshingling the roof and doing other repairs. I pretty much reached the breaking point too, and all summer I kept thinking, “There’s GOT to be more to life than this!” Since I own my home, I can sell it and have enough money to buy a decent van and live in it for quite a while. When I run out of money, I’ll probably do some seasonal or temporary work. I am a certified yoga teacher, but I doubt if there’s a way I could do that while being mobile.

I’ve often felt like I don’t really belong in the “normal” world. I just don’t seem to fit in, and I’ve also had a hard time living a conventional life-style. Like you, I think the thing I’m the most passionate about is just being free. The happiest times in my life have been when I’ve went on long road trips. I love adventure, seeing beautiful places in this country, and meeting new people. Anything but the same old boring routine and talking to the same people day after day. I’m not happy with my life right now, and I’m often depressed and lonely, like you. So I figure, what do I have to lose by trying a different life-style? It’s gotta be better than how I’m living now.

You said you’ll be taking your cat with you. I have a cat and have been concerned about that, because cats generally don’t travel well. Anyway, mine hates to ride in a car. Your cat must do OK with that. ???

I guess I do have one piece of advice. I think you’ll probably need more than $200 to live on. There’s car insurance and license, gas, food, cell phone, toiletries, money for doing laundry, and other every-day necessities. Some of those might be little things but they all add up. I’d also put some money aside for vehicle maintenance and repairs. I’ve estimated my monthly expenses to be around $400. I think you could still cover all of your expenses by doing massage, if you learn some good marketing strategies.

I’m also planning on going to the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous in January, which I think is an excellent place to start. I’m going mostly so I can learn from other people, and also to do a test run to find out if I like the life-style and can handle living in a very small space. If things go as planned for you, I’ll probably see you there. Since we’re both new to this, maybe we can help and support each other in reaching our goals and making our dreams come true!

Hey all, I know it's been a while but thanks for the replies. I appreciate it. I'll keep updating as I figure things out. For instance, this summer I want to try out the lifestyle, head up to Main, stay in Acadia park, see the sights along the way. Get my feet wet, so to speak.

Ya money is the problem, making it on the road, but I figure it's one of those things you just figure out along the way. Connections, networking, etc. I'm aware massage has different license regulations state to state, trust me, I wish that wasn't the case.

I may make a video of me talking about all this stuff and start a channel where people can stay up to date if they wish with my plans. Would help motivate me as well, if I knew there were people who were somewhat intrigued...makes you feel not so alone in the whole ordeal.

Thanks again

Thanks for the update, it is always good to hear from people that had posted with plans, even if they don't quite make it.

If money is the issue, would it be possible to stay in your area, living in your vehicle and save as much as you can? Then when you have enough for three or four months saved up, hit the road, rinse repeat? :)

I'm not going to be mobile for a while (I have kids) but will be living cheap soon, like by the end of March :) I'll be saving every penny I can until the time comes when I can go mobile.

There are around 5000 miles of coastline up here in Maine and a LOT of it looks just like Acadia.
Some of it is better.

I'd be careful posting about where you are going to be online.
Safer to post where you've been and add a little about what you liked.

I workamped 100 miles south of Acadia last summer ,,,,one way to make money while on the road.

Where at?

Best of luck with everything!   Hopefully you are making progress.

I would love to follow along with you if you start keeping your channel current as I'm in the same boat as you(hopefully within two years I  can be full time).  My subscriptions on you tube are all van dwellers and moto adventure stuff.  I use it as motivation.

As for the not knowing what you are doing part I think you are looking at it wrong.  No one knows what they are doing until they live it.  Take the first step.  If you are unhappy now what do you have to lose?  What have you done in the past year that was so amazing you would miss it?  The unknown is scary, but rewarding.

The first motorcycle trip I ever took I had only been on two wheels for 2K miles before it.  It was 6K miles all said and done.  Not the smartest thing I have ever done and it had some steep learning curves but it was one of the most amazing things I have done.  Even the huge mistakes made it more of an adventure.

I made an introduction video, should anyone want to check it out, feel free to subscribe to my channel...i'll update more as I get rolling (pun intended)

Subscribed.

Make sure you record your trip and things that work and don't work.   It does not matter if you just throw things in the car and leave.  That's half the fun, and you learn best by doing.

A lot of people who have been in your position will enjoy watching someone else take the leap.  Hopefully it may inspire a few who are on the edge.

If you get anxious this time you have everyone here cheering you on now.

Thanks nobody...I plan on just trying it out over spring break (march 6-12), so it'll be a good way to get my feet wet. I hope to inspire others by doing this, i really want to grow my channel and become a name in the van world that people know, hence the catch-title "woman's walden"(which i wish was my name on here but i can't figure out how to change it). I have big plans, and nothing stopping me...eh, well, nobody stopping me. Can't say nothing, there's always the money thing, but i have enough for the summer, i think. We'll see.

You are very welcome.  I wish you the best of luck and if you keep adding content I will follow along.  Keeps me occupied while I toil to get to the road.

If I may offer advice(not sure if it's my place) it would be that you keep a positive attitude as often as possible but also show things how they really are.   The good and the bad are parts of life and adventure.  The people who try to edit their videos to show one or the other to try to keep an image or gain something from it usually do poorly.  If you are real and honest people are  drawn to that and want to learn from it.

Got myself an inflatable kayak. Decided to splurge a little, was about $50 used on Amazon. I love kayaking but wasn't willing to haul my hard sided kayak, so this seemed like a good option. Anyone use an inflatable kayak or raft?

I'd like to get a folding bike as well, or maybe just keep the one i have and stick it on the back of my car, but i'm afraid of it getting stolen. Maybe there's a way to safely secure bikes to the car with a locking mechanism...i'll have to research that.
