Started van dwelling in November 2019. Out here in Monterey area waiting for the weather to warm up as will drive to Ohio where I have work for the summer. Spent last night in a Marriott parking lot. Maybe not the best idea as was a little stressful. Am pretty self contained but would like to meet up with some other folks in the area. Am 71 years old and while van dwelling is new to me I have done extensive bike touring and tent camping so have some grounding in the nomadic lifestyle. I have a very basic set up in a Ford Transit Connect cargo van and have gravitated to towns where I have internet, coffee shops and library access.  Would like to explore other options but would need some advice from you more seasoned folks. Tganks, Graeme

Welcome to the CRVL forums Graeme! You may want to consider joining a caravan. Most are camping in locations close to the California/Arizona border where the weather is fairly nice at this time of year. Supplies and internet access at libraries are usually 10 - 20 miles away so you'll need to stock up on supplies and get a cheap internet plan. https://homesonwheelsalliance.org/caravans/

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips, Tricks and Rules" post lists some helpful information to get you started.

Most of our rules boil down to two simple over-riding principles: 1) What you post should provide good information (like your introductory post), and 2) Any response to someone else's post should make them feel glad they are part of this forum community.

We look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome, Graeme - I wanted to go to Ohio this year too but looks like I'll stay on the West Coast this summer instead. In our small town in the middle of the Klamath National Forest there's free internet and the forest outside town to boondock in. I'll bet there are a lot of places like this. Our forest has dispersed camping rules listed on its website.

Caravans are a nice advantage. You get company, conversation, some hep now and then with knowledge and even tool sharing. There are often potlucks to help that "I am tired of my own cooking", gas cost sharing for rides into town for post office and groceries or other errands. Plus when you are off running errands you don't have to worry quite so much about leaving your home behind with no one around to keep an eye on things.
