This design can definitely be improved but for 50-60 bucks and a learning experience ill take it.

Martin,
I think Glenn at To Simplify has a bed that sits up like that, so you might want to check on what mattress he's been using. You'll likely have to backtrack to the finishing of the whole van's rebuild.

His blog is: www.tosimplify.net

(van build is under My Spaceship)

ive seen his blog, but didnt remember his mattress. Ill give it a look. Im thinking ill have to turkey carve my mattress into sections, wrap them in fabric and staple to ply. Its thick tho so not sure how it will work out at the front and rear bend.
and i double checked, the euro vw use this style of bed and indeed, its called a rock n roll bed lol (well, metal version)

I have a 6" (some say Princess) foam mattress. I would say mine would be able to bend appropriately to make the sofa without any need for cutting. Also many futon mattresses could do it. You'd probably just need something like a long, thin bungee to run across it at the bend (the bungee would be buried and not felt but could keep it from sliding perhaps).

Nothing adventurous going on im afraid, guess im reevaluating what i gotta do here.

Bessie the worlds sweetest cow decided to peak in and see how im doing:
