If you're near Raton, NM and want to splurge on a night in a motel, the Motel 6 is $40 / night.  Not fancy, but heat, shower, toilet, electric works .. bed is comfortable.  Not super crowded in the winter.

Two years ago my wife and I made a month long sweep from our MI home to SF, and up to the Pacific Northwest. We stayed in a Motel 6 almost every night. Without exception always spotlessly clean and accommodating; many had been recently redecorated. Why pay the long dollar for stuff you don't need. Even a free breakfast in the morning! I think Motel 6 is tops and never over $70 (most are around $50).

Just my opinion.

I stayed in two Motel 6's during my epic journey to get my trailer. Both were nice and clean. Even the one in Blythe was under 50 dollars. Have a safe trip Pat.

I've stayed in Motel 6s a number of times while traveling to attend firearms training courses.  They've all been nice enough inside, and very reasonably priced.  A few have been in what I would call sketchy neighborhoods.  Back then I was driving around in an old car that no one in their right mind would steal.  Now, with a nice modern, expensive pick up truck, this would be more of a concern for me.

Wow! It's gettin' harder to find even Motel 6's that cheap.

Back in my Navy days in the early eighties, I traveled a lot, literally coast to coast and back twice, and all up and down the east coast.
Stayed at many a Motel 6, and a couple others in similar price range. About $20 a night back then. Tom Bodat ran clean places. :)
Much later, I have paid over $100 a night to sleep in places that were dives compared to Motel 6. Big name doesn't always mean quality.

There are exceptions. A Motel 6 off I-70 in the Denver area sucked. The non-smoking room was saturated with cigarette smoke. I did not even unpack.

Less than ten years ago, I paid over a hundred bucks one night in a Holiday Inn in Crawfordsville, Ind. Drove up to a family reunion with Dad and Mom. Them in one room, me in the other. My room had a huge crack in one wall and the floor. The bathtub was filthy and stained. No coffee pot.
A few years later, when I drove Mom back up there, I made sure we stayed in another motel. Similar price, but much better quality. Had a coffee pot.

Re: Pets at Motel 6

Maybe 12+ years ago, I was attending a private Belgian Tervuren meet at my dog's breeder's home: dog games, BBQ, visiting.  There was a huge dog show in town that weekend, and a Big (sport) Game going to happen.

I had a reservation at the local Motel 6.  There was a young couple ahead of me. The clerk asked if they were there for the game or the dog show.  Game.  She then gave them a verbal list of the things they couldn't do.
* No partying in the rooms or outside the rooms or in the parking lot.
* No drinking outside the room
* No loud music
* No shouting or loud talking.
* No rowdiness.
* No 'stuff' left on the stairs.
* No letting people stay in the room who weren't registered.
Etc.

I was getting rather uneasy.  They sure seemed pickier than the last time I had stayed there.  New management?  I DID tell them I had a dog, right?  Pretty sure...

Then it was my turn.  Was I here for the game or the dog show?  Dog Show.  Name, payment, room number, where it was, here's the key.

"I did mention that I have a dog with me, didn't I?"

"Oh, yes, that's fine.  Have a nice visit and enjoy the show."

WHEW!

True, however the one in Moriarty, NM, is a dump. Or it was four years ago.

Anyone else old enough to remember when Motel 6 was named for the price of it's rooms - six bucks a night. The Super 8 was a step up at eight bucks.

Ha, I had no idea that's where their name came from. They can both change their names to Motel 60 and The Super 80.

I stay at what ever one has the cheapest rates on my phone when traveling requires motel stays. My best yet is $12 room outside of Niagra Falls. This was in 2010. Place wasn't even worth the $12 is was so dirty. I pulled my sleeping roll off my motorcycle and put it on top of the bed because there was no way I was sleeping on it
