Hey there everybody!
I've been lurking this forum as well as r/vandwellers for a little over a month now. I became interested in this sort life style after watching the movie Tiny on Netflix about the guy who builds a tiny home. The way that the people in this documentary portrayed their lives in these ultra small homes by societies standards really hit home with me. It made me think... hey I never wanted more than what I need. So after lurking on sites of that nature I stumbled upon someone living in a cargo van. I thought that was a little extreme but then the possibility of simple living and TRAVEL opened up in my head. Being as young as I am (20 years young) this was a idea that was so foreign but makes so much sense. Why not bounce around the United States for a few years and see what this world has to offer me beyond these corn fields (I live in IOWA).
Anyways, I just wanted to make a post to say hello as well as mention that I admire the lives that most of you are living! I hope that this forum will allow me to learn and turn my next few years into the best ones of my life!

Hi! I just posted on your budget thread. I just wanted to stop over here and say I think it's great to get out and travel while you are young if you can do it. :) I wish that I hadn't been taught to be fearful back when I was young because I would have taken off exploring this country even more on my own when I was still in great shape to do it. Back then everyone who knew my dream thought I was crazy, but now I'm going to do it crazy or not. :D I'm hoping to get some travel in with my adult daughter before she gets too wrapped up in her adult life to be able to do it. I would have done more of it with her when she was younger but it wasn't possible because of a long story/visitation.

Best Wishes on your Adventure! :)

I appreciate the warm welcomes!
Anewbiewannabe your intro post was actually the first post I read after I registered. I'm glad that you're getting the opportunity to chase your dream! Trust me when I explain this idea of "living in a van down by the river" as I put it they still slap a tinfoil hat on my head! Either way its an extremely appealing idea to me and I'm going to follow it as far as I possibly can. I'm glad your going to do some traveling with your daughter. That's one thing I think my parents struggled most with is working 9-5 to pay for the house and food for 5 kids and now that their able to slow down I've entered the 9-5 grind myself in a sense and they feel like they've missed huge chunks of my life. Either way I'm sure it will be a beautiful experience for both of you as you two experience peaks of adventure and the calmness of bonding. I wish you the best of luck as well!

Every day you wake up is the best day of your life
Make each one Count enjoy every one in all ways and every thing about it the good the bad
Why because you are experiencing it
Good luck on your dream make it a reality

As a waiter and a bar tendering at my local (cr)applebees I had a guest the other day and he kind of spoke the same message that you're giving me. His name was Mark and he came in and bought a couple beers from me. He spoke of his profession as a line worker and I really connected with him when he states that there is 168 hours in a week and the only thing that matters is what you do with those hours that your given in that week. I guess i resonated with that because I read something in a book that stated that as a child I remember my father used to drive me to the Yellowstone park every year and even though it was thousands of miles between my home and the destination I had to trust that my father would get us there only seeing 100ft in front of the vehicle traveling at 55MPH and every time we got there safe and sound. That faith will always be present in my life and I appreciate the words of encouragement. Honestly I'm a little drunk and those stories don't truthfully connect but they do in my life lol. Either way I go to work and I tell everyone that I'm either living the dream or I'm alive and that's all I can ask for!
Thanks for the warm welcome and words of wisdom! :)

Welcome aboard!!

I think it's great that you are young and want to see what is out there, instead of just following what most everyone does... go to school, go to more school, have huge student loans when you get out, hope for a job, be worried about security of said job, buy a bigger house than you need, buy stuff to fill said house, have to buy bigger house, bigger car, and on and on and on... until you are stuck until you're 65 and maybe then, just maybe.. get to see some things.. if your health allows now after years of stress of the more and more and more cycle..

I did just what your thinking about in the 60's it was easy to get work and would just give notice and hit the road Africa Europe South America until my late 30's only then was I ready to look for a home base. Always wanted a family so in a way the opposite of the norm. No regrets. I was an older dad and would hear "Wow dude your dad is really old" just made me chuckle. Welcome to the forum.
