Sorry if I'm in the wrong forum, or if something like this has been posted before, or it's just a stupid question.  Anyway, I have a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer with, of course, a trunk. I just want to see the country.  I thought about other vehicles, but this car is paid off and I can make it pretty well on my Social Security alone.  I can put some money into it, but don't want to drop a couple thousand, so I want to build it myself if possible.  I also want to have a secondary electrical supply that can power a fridge or computer or whatever.   Has anyone ever seen a car with trunk modified for sleeping and basically living?  I would love to see a video or pics.  Thanks.

I believe someone converted an older large ford LTD by removing all the seats other than the driver’s seat a few years back.

Welcome. Go over to the newcomers corner and introduce yourself.

Personally, I would remove the back seat and possibly the passenger seat if you are traveling alone. You may find that with the back seat removed, there is room for your feet and legs to go into the trunk for sleeping and maybe not. There might be bracing in the way. With the passenger seat removed, you may be able to stretch out without involving the trunk.

There are numerous car builds on here but I don't recall a Lancer.

Youtube has quite a few videos on car conversions...in particular the cheaprvliving youtube channel.

Here is a video of a Yaris conversion... this is a much smaller car than the Lancer.

Also here  on the forum is a build out of a prius.

I think many people are living comfortably in a car of some various sizes.  keep us posted to your progress.

Thanks everyone.  I watched a vid of a guy taking the back seats out to replace them.  I do believe there is some bracing underneath, but could probably build a platform bed over that and use the underneath for storage.  Thanks for the link.  I'm going to give this some serious thought.  I was approved for a 2012 Prius today, but decided I don't want any more expenses.  Thanks again.

OK, put the back seat and passenger seat in storage, yes yank them. Flatten out all of that area with plywood and carpet glued to it and spacers as needed, with hatches to the footwells for storage. Fridge in trunk, folding solars and 1 expensive but lightweight 100ah  lifepo.  Search "car conversion"  "living in car"  You can get as much as 7' or more of lay down room on the passenger side.

Let me invite you to look at the first link below "Van Conversion".  At the top there are a couple of links to converting a Utility Trailer and something called a  "Bug Out Car".   Look at the Bug Out Car page.

There the  passenger's front bucket seat is removed, the rear seats removed, and  the bracing behind the back seats removed (or modified) so that a twin bed mattress could be fit between the dash and the back of the trunk.  You may have to plywood the back floors to have a fairly  flat support for the mattress.

I designed a "tonneau" cover that would cover the interior for privacy.  (only the drivers seat would be exposed)

There may not be a lot of room left for other amenities but having a small ice chest, spare clothing, some tools,
and other misc things would give you a place to sleep and have some food.  Beyond that you may be using public restrooms, laundromats, gym's for taking showers, using WIFI, recharging, watching some TV news, etc may provide the rest of your life support when on the road.   See the bottom link for more about that.

This Corona issue has put a major crimp in what was an easier life before.   So you'll have to be more resourceful
if you go on the road now.
