I bought a kobo ebook reader yesterday for $50 at a borders bookstore that was closing down. (While the store claims to be discounting from $139, the website has the same model for $99.)

The epaper display is readable, and works in dim to bright light. I'd prefer the display to be a bit bigger. Display of PDF files can be hard to read -- you need to scroll around unless you can read really tiny fonts and it's not very good at pictures or diagrams.

It only handles epub and pdf files, so I needed to install calibre on my linux system to convert formats. Calibre had problems with some of the books on the baen cd I was trying to convert until tryed the rtf files.

It can take sdhc cards up the 32gb if the thousand or so books you can store on the internal 1gb drive isn't enough. However, it will scan the card at powerup and that takes a few seconds with only a half dozen files on the card.

The internal recharable battery isn't replaceable, and you need a usb power source to charge it.

The interface uses bottons rather than a touch screen, and it's a bit hard to use with only the left hand.

Overall, it's quite usable for reading books. I have not tried the wifi mode on it, or purchased any books from their estore.

Cool Blars....I just got a Nook ereader for my birthday and am excited to learn to use it...as I told you before I am not intuitive with this stuff so I need to study the manual before I start....
I chose this guy over the Kindle mostly because I could use the library so will have to see how it works....
Have fun with yours...
bri

I got the kindle for xmas. Regardless of brand these things are a god send because of how much space they will save you. The best part is that I've hardly spent anything on replacing books because most of what I owned is in the public domain and I've been able to find free copies of them.

Enjoy

Good news Steve...maybe a lot of my stuff will be free too...
Bri

I usually read science fiction, and many of books from Baen are available free in electronic form. Unfortunatly other publishers arn't as generous.
There is now a more complete review on my blog. (see sig)
