I'm Josh, 40 - a British guy living in WA for last 17 years. I'm a total noobie to camping and living in a van, but life has been hard on me recently, lost my wife through a long and brutal cancer battle, my dad died also and got heartbroken with someone all within the last 18 months. Now my health is having some issues, layoffs at work, job security gone, I'm living in a house of cards that could collapse all around me anytime.

Plus I think I need get away for a while, find some place better, travel more, I flown about a bit in the last year, but not done much road travel, I really need to live out in the world before it's too late. I also been thinking about natural  disasters and the need to be able to bug out for a couple weeks or more. It's starting to sink in that before I end up in a financial mess, I should be using what I have now to plan for all of that, and what I will need is a place to live on wheels.

I got something to start with, it's an old basic Kia Sedona Minivan. I got it when I needed something to move wifes medical equipment and it's become my daily drive.  It's old, but it's a van, I would want something better in the future, but it's a start.

I saw a video on the youtube channel of a guy that did a great job with a Sedona, going to try to use his ideas and see what fits. This will be my toe in the water.

I also want to take some trips with my corgi dog, she travels to work with me now, so she'll be ok in the car.

Not sure where to go yet for getaways with the dog in WA and Oregon coast yet. Any good dog places anyone know of?

Well thanks for reading, I needed to vent a little too. Been through a lot, but I'm a survivor, I just need to get better prepared and focus on making my Kia livable and learn the nomad ways. It'll help my spirit.

Welcome, good luck with your build!

I'm with Mvmm. Get the basics for camping and head out. Google boondockers for ideas on free campng. Add more equipment as you think you need it. I have always found camping to be excellent therapy. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Welcome to the CRVL forums Ambrit!  Sorry about the loss of your wife and father. That's a hard thing to go through so make sure to take care of yourself.

Washington state has an inexpensive pass that will allow you to camp for free at many small campgrounds - http://discoverpass.wa.gov/31/About-the-Pass

Here are some of the campgrounds - https://www.dnr.wa.gov/go

This link has more - https://wdfw.wa.gov/lands/water_access/
The water access sites require a bit of research since not all are suitable for camping.

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started.   We look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome Josh...

Hopefully the nomadic life will help you through your recent loss and heartache...

Hang in there and safe travels!
