I am looking for a used van or RV. How can the accuracy of an odometer reading be verified? Are there any telltale indicators that an odometer has been tampered with?

Compare the odometer reading with the wear and tear on the drivers' seat, and the pedals. Also look at the overall condition of the vehicle - it should all look reasonable for the mileage.

If the pedals look brand new but the odometer shows, say, 160,000, then someone has replaced the pedal cover. Most likely to try to hide a higher odometer reading.

I know the older vehicles you could see that the numbers lined up properly but with the newer vehicles I'm not sure if that still applies.

If it has OBD2 you can take it to a dealership and verified the mileage off the engine computer.
