How soon in advance should you apply for the warehouse work? If I want to work in Reno in October, when should I apply?

We met a couple who had worked at one of the Amazons. They left at the end of their deal with some sweet savings and a bonus for completion.
They said you have to treat it like any job and just do the do. They had a good attitude and it served them well.
They did relate stories about some who were disgruntled and left early, so its not for all mindsets. Always to do your research and try to talk to those who have been there, done that.

I also know a couple who have done the Amazon holiday season several times. Long hours but they said that they try to put you in a job that suits your athletic ability. Older less fit people will pack boxes and not be running the miles of isles. Another thing I liked is that pet owners on different shifts will walk each others dogs at the camping areas to make it easier on them. I think a stint at Amazon just might be in my future.

We've thought about doing the River (Amazon), but Margie can't stand for a shift. I have packing/shipping skills and could probably work a stationary job, but not lots of walking, as I'd need to carry my O2 tank pack.
Since only one of us can do the job it wouldn't really suit us as a couple.

I enjoyed amazon ...(worked 1 Season) got alot of exercise , lost a few pounds, made a few bucks!

its not a thinking job and its very repetitive.....if you dont like doing things over and over at a set pace its not for you.....but if you want to make some money plus get your lot rent & utilities for free while your doing it....its a good way to boost the cash and then dash for AZ...for winter quarter and have enough to hold things over for 3 or 4 months!!

wish I could still do it......

Cindi, thanks for the vid link. We talked to the folks at the booth in the Big Tent show at Quartzsite and they told us about this amazing system. May seem like lots of human jobs are taken, but with as many millions of products as can be accessed this way it would take buildings many times larger to accommodate movement.

Geeze, I sound like I'm pro robotics in lieu of people jobs. Fact is, one thing opens doors to other things and this is the way of the future we all have to adapt to. I'm one who feels there's a job out there for anyone creative enough to take it and make the best of it. Just wish my health agreed with my views :p

I know several friends who have worked there and its hard physical work, but you buckle down and do it if you need the money.

My girlfriend is going to work in Reno in September and she got her job lined up a few weeks ago. So they are still hiring.

NOW is the time to go apply! Here:

Remember, all their warehouses are in cold places and staying warm will become a big deal if you are in a van. Sometimes they put you up in a RV park that is 30 miles from the warehouse so you will have a long commute.

Colder climates are a downside for me. In September is too late in the season to be starting out in Reno.
I still think its a good thing for those who need the income and can handle the situation. A paying job for part of the year can make a big difference for lots of us.

I applied last night to Amazon in KY. I'm hoping to get a campsite at the place directly across the street to eliminate the commuting issue. Since they pay for electric, a radiator style heater and electric blanket should keep the two little dogs and I toasty. My only issue is my big dog. He loves a long off leash run every day. I have a friend who could probably keep him for the two months. He adores her but I'd feel like I was deserting my son. That's going to be a hard decision. The cross country trip will be delayed a few months but a lot more enjoyable with the income from Amazon.

I can't speak for KY, but in Reno, everything else is free but you have to pay for electric. But I believe it's only a flat fee of $50 a month so it's cheap compared to your income.

I was told the same thing by someone who had worked Reno.

Electric is free in Kentucky. I can get by with a space heater and electric blanket. They even have health insurance, what a novelty. I've run the idea through my friends and they all say go for it. My Mother, negative Nelly that she is, says it's too much for me physically. I know there are many that are much older than I work Amazon, I can do anything for two months. Lose weight, get in shape, and get on the road with a big chunk of change... sounds like a win win to me.

Stupid question but does anybody know if Amazon allows you to go out and smoke (cigarettes) on your break? Of all the things to worry about, this one is on the top of my list and can't find the answer on Google. Bindi, I'm sure that my stint at Amazon will give me lots of blog entry material.

This might be a good opportunity to get serious about quitting tobacco.
I suppose a person could use vapor cigs. I've heard the custom juices do the job...never tried them. Nearly 5 yrs ago I looked at the money I was burning up and decided it was time. Glad I did considering the cost out this way these days. No way was I giving in to those cheap, foul tasting/smelling off brands. (I'm not one to nit pick a smoker who ain't blowing it my way...do your own thing).

Amazon is very tolerant of their camperforce workers, they know they are older and not as able physically so they take good care of them.

I don't know if you can go outside on your break to smoke, but I do know the warehouses are so huge that just walking to the outside and back would probably take your whole break and not leave you time to smoke!
