Gypsychic-
I had the same problem with the reviews for a 12 volt water heater and just finally had to pick one.
I purchased http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0006...&dpID=31tzEKsm1ZL&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SY200_QL40
I know it has a relatively high current draw but don't have the detail. I just knew that I needed a heavy duty outlet fused at 10 amps. I bought the blue seas outlet with Dual USB and volt meter and ran it directly to the battery. This way I could have a heavy duty outlet & USB & a way to monitor the 12 volt battery ( just need to run separate wires to the battery for the volt meter). You can just run the outlet.
It takes up to 15-20 minutes for a good boil.
