So... I just joined this site... I am from Australia and am in Nevada right now.

I have actually been in the US for some time and spent the last US summer in Alaska hitchhiking around to see glaciers, snow, bears, mushrooms, people, mountains, etc.

After my VISA ran out I dropped down into Canada where I met with most of my family who flew over to visit. We organised that I'd get a car. A minivan seemed like it would be a could choice to sit us all and then convert into a camper when they left.
After a few weeks of snow/rain, we decided to retreat south and drove down Hwy 101, visiting the Redwoods and San Fran before heading inland to Yosemite. We bought chains, and after entering the park, got stuck for about 5 hrs whilst or the crashed and stranded cars were removed from the road. We finally got a nice day when they decided to close the park due to the impending flooding :(
As we were driving through the rain to Kings Canyon/Sequoia they closed that two - we found out later that one of the named trees fell over during the storm. A week in Death Valley and then a week or so in Vegas... a snowed out visit to the Grand Canyon (we didn't see a thing), and before I new it I was by myself....
Some time around Redrock, I then returned to DV for a few weeks to do some more canyoneering (canyoning as we call it in Australia). On my way back I met a guy in Pahrump. It happens that he was no newbie to car camperisation and showed me a number of cool sights including this one - so here I am!
Danny was very kind and offered to let me use his tools as well as utilise his expertise! I considered it for a while before accepting - I had wanted to improve my car livability for some time, but it always seemed a little difficult and just out of reach. So today, after drawing up some ideas in Sketchup we headed down to the local Home Depot for some materials.

To start off, we got the car fairly level and then (since the floor wasn't flat/level) we shimmed up a 4x4 and glued on small pieces of cardboard which were cut to conform to the floor.

We then used this profile to mark the ply wood and cut it to shape with a jig saw.

We repeated this for the other bed edge and then cut some 2x4 to the right length to use as cross members. Pre drilling the ply, we fixed the two faces together with some glue and torque screws.

It was a good feeling to slide the frame into the back of the van!

It was getting dark, so by torchlight we cut the top piece of ply and slid it into place. Put the mattress on top and went inside to relax and think about plans for tomorrow. Cutting the top piece and adding some hinges so you can access the space more easily.

Thanks for all the help Danny. And how could I forget Nicki!

Welcome and that is a great story, hope to hear more!

Oh, and I saw the idea of leaving one of the seats up in Bob's new video, which was serendipitously posted whilst browsing the internet for ideas!

It was a lot of fun for me as well. I have been down on medical stuff this last month, so was great to be outside. Canyoning.Cat did all the work. I drove a couple of screws, that's about all, (Dr. says no upper body work until I mend a bit more). His cuts are very precise. Good to have young eyes. It is designed so that milk crates will fit under for organisation. Tomorrow he can move stuff in and we will see what to do about the other half, (where his stuff is now).

Funniest thing I've read today! *runs for cover*

We finished up the bed and table today. Some of the design features are that milk crates can be used under the bed and have access from the top.  The front to back hinge was off set 4" towards the middle of the van so that the mattress would not get squeezed by opening the lid. The front of the bed has a shelf that cantilevers over the factory floor storage units so one can still get to them. a milk crate also fits in between.

One of the factory rear chairs can still be raised and lowered into the floor. There is a table unit that can be used with it.
The rotating table idea came from here
