I'm looking to purchase a cargo van, but all the decent ones are in locations far from home. How can I get a potential purchase checked out when I don't know which mechanics to trust in the area?

The short answer is you can't.

Perhaps include a location & someone here might be able to recommend someone.

One basic rule is to look for an independent place in the phone book that has been in business for a long time in one location. A crappy mechanic can't usually stay in business long.

Call ahead and ask a few questions.

How much to check it out. what kind of time schedule for doing it.  Can I get it in writing.

The last one will help separate the pack.

I once was interested in a Cadillac.  I took it to a dealership, and the mechanic came out and told me to save my money, the motor had a bad rep. (8-6-4)  No charge.

What Suanne said. find a reputable mobile mechanic using google, AAA reviews and yelp. An honest seller won't have a problem with you doing that.

Call the local dealer and arrange to pay by credit card for a pre-purchase inspection. Have the seller drive it down and drop it off. Then call the dealer, have them email you the report and pay by CC.

Easy Peasy!!!

Great suggestions! I've been stressing out a lot about this. Such a shame that most vans are so far away for me. Thanks!

Find out if Angie's List covers a particular area.  If so, pay for an account or find someone who has an account and look up auto mechanics.

What?!  Bob recommending the use of credit cards?  What is this world coming to?   ;)
