Hello everyone, I am John and I'm from Oregon. I dont have my own van yet but I've been researching van dwelling for over a year now. This is something I am very interested in and by the end of October am hoping to have a van. The thing is, I am single, I don't have kids, I'm not tied down in any way and I want to get out and see the world so I think I'm in a good position for this. As far as vans go does anyone have a preference? Like a window passenger van vs a cargo van. I'm kind of leaning torwards the cargo van with rear tinted windows and tinted side door window, mabye a white GMC Vandura. From what I'm read Vandura's get decent fuel economy, in the mid teens. I'm just not sure about stealth parking. I don't have a problem with the idea of parking in plain sight but I'm thinking a cargo van would blend in better in a industrial area or by businesses and a passenger van might blend in better in urban envirements. But idk about that because for example just down the street from me theres a sub division with houses being built all over and theres a mix of passenger/cargo contractor vans parked everywhere. On Youtube theres this guy 'Bug out vehicles' I think his name is Gary, in my opinion his van is perfect except his is blue. Another question I have is work. Right now my job is seasonal, wildland firefighter, and I'm picturing myself during my travels finding a place I like and seeking work there but don't most places require an address? Will a po box be ok for this? I will be able to sustain myself for a while so this is not something I'm real worried about right off the bat but its something I think about. Anyway I think I stretched out my introduction enough lol, sorry about that. I look forward to hearing from you all and talking and sharing stuff in the coming months. BTW I am very sorry if I put this post in the wrong spot, I didnt see the option to start a new thread. Later

Welcome John from Oregon. Not being tied down and few responsibilities sounds like a good way to start a new exciting life.

Hello John from Oregon,
I'm brand new too and like you have been doing research. I did run across a blog that was really helpful to me (it led me here which a very good thing) Becky who hosts the blog Interstellar Orchard has documented her journey to a full timing RV lifestyle. She covers topics about residency and finding jobs as well as a multitude of other things. She really gets into the details about how to do it. I highly recommend it!
k

Thanks K, I was unaware of that blog. Interesting, and I will have to return to it as I have more time.
-Bruce

Hi, I'm Charles. I built a camper for my dodge truck. I may have over done it a bit but I needed the space. I modeled it from a combination of a lot of pictures taking bits and pieces here and there. I put it together over the past year and it is about 2 weeks from being lived in. (as I find the time between work). I like the idea on the solar ware heater. 1. Does it work well? Also I bought 2 marine/r.v batteries deep cycle, but amp hours was not on the battery. only cold cranking amps . 2. Is there a way to estimate the amp hours by the cold cranking amps? I intend to attach a 2000 w dc ac inverter to them for some electricity when I want it. I've been researching this for a while, but always open for more ideas. appreciate any reply. Charles

Hi: I am Nora from Michigan. I have been reading this forum for about a year now. How weird is it to feel that one " knows" people when they have never met or spoken? But that is how I feel. I am grateful to you all for giving me a glimpse into your lives and your way of life. You have inspired me. Althoughit will be at least 5 years until my husband and I can hit the road full time I have taken some of Bobs teachings to heart and have began the process of getting rid of things, of educating myself and trying short trips. We still have 7 kids at home so it will be awhile...but...there is much to do. My son and I are going to try to make a solar oven. This I would have never known about except for you all. I do have a question. Is anyone out there in a wheelchair and living either part or full time on the road? My son is 13 and had a firm of MS (nonprogressive). He is extremely healthy dispite the fact that he is ventilator dependent. We have camped occassionally with him. He does require a lot of electricity which is why we would almost have to travel in our old motorhome. I'm sorry I am so "chatty" but like I said it feels like I am talking to old friends. I know, how presumptuous of me. If there are any eheelchair users out there with tips I would appreciate them. One last thing, although it sounds like many of you are out west, if anyone travels through sw MI and needs a place to park or a shower feel free to stop by. Thanks so much for " listening" to me ramble. Nora

welcome landshark and Justinsgram Glad you found us and shared a little about yourselves. This is a very warm forum community.

Welcome to both of you. There are always questions, so ask away. One one will answer.

I think there are a couple of wheelchair folk on here. I know there are several with respitory conditions.

Again welcome.
