Hello all!

I'm here to learn about RV living. Currently I'm an over the road truck driver. That means I live in a big truck for four to six weeks and go home for about 4 days before going out on the road again. So, I'm already used to living in a confined space. I'm 51 years old and starting to plan my retirement and the RV life looks pretty good to me. But, I'm not sure about what kind of vehicle would serve me best or how to go about choosing one. I have lots of questions and am looking forward to getting to know everyone.

I should also mention that I'm dyslexic. So, please don't confuse my spelling mistakes with stupidity. I always spell check everything, but once in a while, I choose the wrong word from the list.

Right now I'm on my home time and staying in a motel. So, I'm using the free WyFy. When I'm on the road I use the WyFy hotspot feature on my android smart phone. It's usually a pretty good connection. That means you guys may be seeing a lot of me around here.

Welcome Scoundrel! I read your other post about whether a van or a RV would be the best choice for you. A good thing to do would be to visit a large RV dealer and check them all out. Go through the motions of daily living in the ones that you like the best so that you'll be able to see if you'll be comfortable. Keep in mind that commercially built class Bs are totally stuffed with things that you most likely will not include in your own build so you'll have more room. Class Cs are very much comfortable and ready to move in but you can still change, remove and alter a lot of stuff to suit you. Also consider how you'll be using your vehicle, what type of traveling you'll be doing and where you'll be staying -campgrounds, boondocking or stealth parking on the street.

@tonyandkaren

Yes, I keep meaning to do that. But, the few days a month when I'm home are usually filled with taking care of personal business. Today I'm have a dentist appointment, have to meet a friend I'm giving some of my stuff to that I'm tired of paying to store and need to clear out a few things I've been storing at my father's place for too long. But, you're right, I should visit a dealer or two.

I'm really leaning to a class c because I'm a pretty big guy and I plan on living in it full time. It would be nice to stand up without bumping my head.

Welcome from NorCal. loads of MV diesel busses out on the open road usually from 18 to 22 ft and yes you can standup my rig is a 2001 E350 fleamarket/home on wheels. kinda gypsy. enjoy

@ rokguy

Oh man, you're asking questions about things I don't pay attention to. I just check the fluid levels and belts and have never even looked at what engine it is. When I get back on it this Sunday, I'll find out for you.

Welcome Scoundrel and howdy from a Louisiana neighbor! Also read your other thread and wanted to throw an alternative idea out there - convert a bus! Plenty of head room in the shuttle bus I converted and lots of room to build things exactly like you want them.

@ CrossCountryGal

Did you have any issues getting insurance for your bus after converting it?

Insurance has been a sticking point It was not able to be insured as a motorhome/rv and therefore costs me $109 per month as opposed to $200-$300 annually. For that reason alone I've considered looking at a Class C, but for the time being my checkbook says stick with what I've got.

@ CrossCountryGirl

But, you were able to find some kind of coverage and that's the important thing. I may follow your lead in this matter. Thanks for filling me in.

Welcome. I guess it depends on what state you're in. Here in Florida I asked about registering a bus and they said bring it in and it gets inspected and registered as a mh. I have my eye out for a small van based transit bus. Just haven't connected yet. Although I reserve the right to change my mind.

Again welcome to the group.
