Spazz from stp here.

It's been about fifteen years since I realized that my worst nightmare (dying in disgrace in a dark alley somewhere) and my wildest fantasy (living fulltime on the road) were exactly the same thing only with different attitudes.

It's been about three years since my family disowned me and I started researching the logistics of living in my vehicle.

It was for about three months that my landlord illegally locked me out of my home of eighteen years with no warning whatsoever. I lived in a 32 year old four door sedan until my paralegal was able to get me back in the house temporarily.

It's been about three days since I bought my own "house", a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan that I promptly named "Tara". She still needs a valve cover gasket and some other mechanical work done on her and I also need to use her as a cargo van to haul stuff to storage.

The landlord wants me out by the first of October, but no actual eviction papers have ever been filed in court. My paralegal and I are just sick of each other and need this to be over.

Welcome Spazz to the CRVL forums! To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips, Tricks and Rules" post lists some helpful information to get you started.

Most of our rules boil down to two simple over-riding principles: 1) What you post should provide good information (like your introductory post), and 2) Any response to someone else's post should make them feel glad they are part of this forum community.

We look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome to the forum Spzzz, and happy housewarming!

I would advise selling or donating everything instead of paying storage. I was into the storage payments for years and finally limited myself to the smallest possible storage locker for under $50 per month. But still, better to spend that on something to fit your van lifestyle than to hang onto S&B stuff you will never need. Family heirlooms should be passed on to someone with a house or sold at the consignment shop.

Think freedom!!! Throw off that ball and chain to all your stuff.

Spazz -   I concur with Crofter.  If you are living on the road there is really no point in paying to store something.  Paying storage to keep something of value can quickly exceed the value of that thing or collection of things, that doesn't make them more valuable, it just makes you poor.  Focus on what you need first and then be very honest about the rest of your priorities.  Make sure that what ever you keep is helping you live your life.
Sell and barter what you can not take.  Just because you aren't paying rent doesn't mean you won't still have overhead.  Tires wear out, insurance has to be paid.  Food isn't free, (at least not good food).
If it makes you feel better, pass on special things to special friends. Donate what you can and trash the rest.  Change involves sacrifice and delaying it only makes it worse, because time has it's own value.
He who owns less is less owned.
Good luck.

Welcome to the forum spaz. Storage units are a hole that you throw money into. I pay $150 a month to store everything from the nature center I used to run. I can’t afford that I need the 150 a month for living. I didn’t make Septembers payment so they’re threatening to auction it off in November. They don’t care about the multiple thousands of dollars I’ve spent over the years as a loyal customer. So I start on October with $350 off the Social Security just to keep that crap in the shed. I’ve got to find a way to dispose of it before I leave for Florida the end of November. A lot of neat stuff in there but I can’t afford to keep it anymore. Don’t fall into the trap of throwing your money into the hole called storage. If I lived in one area for a long time I might get a little 5 x 5 storage shed to keep some things dry and handy but nothing bigger than that. Welcome to the forum welcome to the nomads I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Thank you for the encouragement

The two bedroom house I no longer need is gone, but I still have homeschooling materials free for shipping if anyone wants them.

I love the DCG and am thinking about upgrading to a newer one with fewer
miles on her and a roof rack and tow bar ... eventually.

For now I have so many basics to learn. I am not going to make it to Quartzsite by the 14th, but I have found the online classes on YouTube

I'm also enjoying lurking on the forums for now and quietly learning from all of you.

I look forward to getting to know you in the future and hope to share a bit of Humboldt someday, because surely better days are ahead.

Wish you all the best. Humboldt County is beautiful. You have a great adaptive attitude, and will succeed in the world out here. You do not have to move great distances to get a good start. Just ask small companies, hotels, etc. along the way if they need help, any help. Getting that 'quick buck' is an idiom best not forgotten. Take care!

Hey, this isn't going to work out but no worries; it's all good.

I can't find the "delete account" button. Can you help me?
