This week (Friday ) I am flying out to my property in St Johns area Arizona ;)
I will be living in my campervan for at least a year and maybe longer
I do not post much at present as i really do not have much experience to share
,but I have learned a lot here to help me in making this move  ;)
i mentioned before that Jeff at Arizonahothomestead.com
has been very helpfull and i hope that our internet friendship continues
though he will only be 60 miles away we can maybe
meet up and help each other on projects
I have a youtube channel where i will be posting vids though it will just be a record
not a highly polished website as i am not that computer savvy plus i wont have any internet till i go to town once a week
and only know enough to make my computer gasp LOL.
a friend is going to drive one of my vehicles to the property and i will video our progress
for the future even though it s kind of out the way i would like to welcome anyone passing by to stay over
and share any services i am able to offer
a member here (SCAR) was very welcoming when i travelled last year
looking for properties.
my channel is in my name ROY Dredge i dont have any problems posting that as i dont worry about that kind of thing

Kind offer about staying a few if out your way. Looking forward to seeing your homesteading adventures. Make sure to post here every once in a while when you have new videos. Good luck & enjoy!

I'll be looking forward to following along on your adventure, Roy! You must be excited!

Thanks for the invite! Hopefully, I can stop, in on my way annual eastward trek next year.

Got you saved on YT. Nice classic van.

We came back down thru that area after our summer trip to N.M. and Colo.
Maybe we'll drift by one day.

Will look forward to your vids.

Can you give us any particulars on the land and its location and anything you can about the area too?

i will be taking pix and video all will be revealed

I was looking at some land in the area, I was born in Arizona but, I'm not familiar with St John's.

The area is approx 240 miles east of Flagstaff and similar difference north of Phoenix its a relatively small town though it is the county seat for Apache
county
the other towns reasonable close by are Sho Low,Snowflake,Sanders,  Eager
Good Luck

Beautiful country! Me and Vic have been through there many times .Thanks for the offer to stay there. If in Arkansas, everyone should remember I have room for company.

Very pretty and much like a lot of land we drove through. Have a wonderful time and keep us posted!

Let me warn you about those Juniper trees; they have a little midge that live in them that in the spring at just the right temperature go berserk. They are so small I never once saw one but they will bite you up like you can't imagine.

But the worst part is the bite lasts over a week and is horrible. It itches and hurts the whole time. You'll wake up with a dozen bites everywhere, every day and you'll hope you die soon!

I camp in the Junipers every spring and my ironclad policy is, when I get the first bite, I pack up and leave and head up into the Ponderosa pines where they aren't.

The good news is they don't last, it's just in the spring. I've never stayed long enough to know how long they last but I think it's about a month. I would assume DEET would keep them off, but I hate the stuff so I leave instead. Since you can't leave, you'll have to wear it constantly for the month.
Bob

Thanks bob
I was indeed itching the first couple days but after applying some skin moistureizer cream i am doing ok  perhaps bathing in DE may be a cure  :D

Rather than bathing in Deet, maybe take a look at treating your clothing with Permethrin and use Picaridin instead. Both are much safer for you than Deet.

DE (diatomaceous earth) is a lot safer than deet and permethrin. There was some teasing going on in that post though the use might be valid. ;) Permethrin is safer than deet but it is one of the two highest toxicity pesticides in the organic arsenal---permethrin and rotenone---so should be used with care. Before the national organic standards, at least in our area, farmers had to go through a whole process before using permethrin because of it. Not sure of procedures on the national standards now because once they started getting watered down to accommodate big agra I stopped paying attention.

The Permethrin I'm using on clothing is .5%. It's enough when clothes are treated and cared for properly to ward off biting insects. I'm pretty sure that the Permethrin that's used around farms is upwards of 10% IIRC. I know the guys that insist on buying it at the farm supply stores had to dilute it many times before using it on clothes. The Sawyers Permethrin isn't meant for on skin. I treat the bug net on my hammock with it and my outer layer of clothes, not my socks and inner wear. My  hat will get everything but the hat band treated with it.

People use deet and off too but that doesn't mean they are without risk. Some have sensitivities so it's good information to share about permethrin for those who don't know it all already---especially since for vandwelling those clothes will be off at some point in the van. ;)

I will tell you what to do with those junipers. make gin. around my sister's house in central Oregon there are a lot of junipers if you go hike you find lots of old campsites where they made gin during prohibition. I never notice the bugs there, but I have a mental block on bugs. highdesertranger
