Up until I moved away from CA, I'd been getting my haircuts at the same place for years. It wasn't til I moved to MN that I had to experiment until I found a place I liked, and then repeated the whole process again after moving to TX. It takes time to find a good place with someone you trust won't leave you with a bad haircut. This is kind of why I changed my style years ago and just started getting a #2 on the sides and #4 up top. It's pretty simple and hard to mess up.

What happens if I want to go back to something a little longer with a style. I'm wondering how you guys handle this when you're constantly moving. Or you don't and do what I'm doing already?

My hair was long... nearly elbow length when wet. Further, as it grows it is curly... like long, blonde shirley-temple springs. Single and younger,i loved it. You only sat in a bar for 30 minutes max before s-o-m-e girl walked and asked to touch it. It was awful!

That was all fine and dandy until while working on a kayak paddle I got my ponytail EATEN by a bench grinder! Three inch plug ripped out by the roots, a 1"x3.5" section ground into the back of my scalp.

Ever since then it is a #2 all over unless it is really hot then I do a #1. I can do it myself but easier if Ms PM is around to touch up what I miss.

Whatever hair color I have, you will always see pink it my hair LOL I love pink!!

If you're traveling through a town of any size, look up the local barber school or beauty college and ask for one of their advanced students.

Some of the better haircuts I've gotten have been $5 cuts from these places.

Of course, anyone can give you a bad haircut! I've had terrible haircuts from barbers/stylists who I'd been using for years that were just having a bad day. Fortunately, it does grow back! Hats come in handy, sometimes.

I keep my hair short any more and have no trouble getting it done fine as long as it is short...I do have my favorite barber in my home town and at the RTR "Noles the barber" gave some really nice haircuts as a gift to several of us....men and women...jeez some of the women's hair is shorter than mine...

I had a freek-flag flying for many years but once all the old guys started wearing a scrawny little ponytail with the fringe around the bald spot, I gave it up. It felt a bit sad.....

I am lucky I didn't have a Paddling man episode. I remember shop class in the 50's and them being pretty harsh about the one girl tying up her hair so it wouldn't get ripped out by the drill press. LOL, since i almost always worked in shops, it stuck with me.

Bri

I cut my own hair with clippers and a quarter inch attachment. On the back of my neck I use a one eighth attachment. I just cut till no more hair comes off. I also have a hat just in case.

Same here, though sans the hat at present. Bought my clippers for $15 and have saved hundreds.

I tried the FlowBee, but it took forever with my thick hair. And, when on the road it doesn't make sense to carry a vaccuum.

Although a woman, I decided to go short with a do-it-yourself clipper (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Norelco-40-Do-It-Yourself-Clipper/dp/B004QWVY8A). I use the longest #9 length, about a half inch all around and then trim the back even with just the blade.

During the past 6 months, I've been clipping my own hair every one or two weeks. Since it's recharable, I'll use my inverter to recharge while on the road. I like the ease of use for do-it-yourself with this particular clipper.

Keeping my hair short works out great in the summer. I will probably let it grow in the winter for warmth. Once it starts growing out some, I'll probably go to someplace inexpensive, like Great Clips to have it professionally shaped.

Suanne ... at homebase in WA State

I'm another one in the "cut your own hair club". Been doing it myself for 15 years at least.

At one time I used scissors when I was wanting a longer length. So I know from experience you can do it. Just pull the hair strait between your fingers. Then cut along your fingers using them as a guide.

You will need 2 mirrors to accomplish this. And the hardest part is that everything will look backwards. Just take your time and your senses will adjust.

Now I just use the Whal clippers with three different guards. And finish with no guard around the back of neck and around ears.

I use Walmart. They have coupons sometimes. Every 3 or 4 or 5 months whether it needs it or not. I have a picture on my phone that I can show them. Usually I just tell them about the top and I think it is a 2 1/2 clipper on the sides. I have yet to have a bad haircut that didn't grow out, so I don't worry too much about it.

Oh, I had on safety glasses and my hair in a ponytail. I bent down and turned my head sideways to confirm how far into the epoxy of the paddle I had ground when... RIIIIIIPPPP!!!!

Remind sometime... I'll tell you how my ankle was crushed by 1600 lbs of government cheese and I ended up in a wheelchair for six months.

There is a saying that comes to mind "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff"... There is so many other things to worry about in this life style that are literally life and death, but worrying about a hair cut or for that matter what your hair looks like is just a trivial joke...

Now not dogging the poster for this in no way, but it is this thinking that really falls by the wayside when the rubber hits the road....

There's an older saying "The unforeseen does not exist". You know why that is? Someone took the time to consider it well in advance of it becoming a concern. Jules Verne was a man ahead of his time!

So in other words. It really wasn't a worry so much as an afterthought during lunch the other day. I'm coming up on needing a haircut and was curious to hear how others deal with it.
