Kinda sorta new guy here. Looking at vans on e-bay and craigs list. I've long ago had it with exorbitant rents, taxes, etc. I was fortunate to get debt-free a few years ago, but with escalating living expenses keeping me on the slow-track, I decided to finally take the plunge and dive into van life. My family thinks I'm crazy. Well, that's nothing new. Fortunately I've lived most of my life on the road, either as a trucker, or just moving from place to place. Closer than ever to "minimalist" living, it's getting more attractive with each passing day. And closer to retirement as well. Short term plan is to locate and acquire a van and begin outfitting it between now and July, when my present lease expires, keep the job as long as I can, then retire to the road. Even though I rent a room in an upscale McMansion neighborhood, I occasionally just park and sleep in my Jeep pickup, just because I don't like where I live. Homeless? No. Houseless!!!! Big difference. Anyway, it would be nice to hear from other singles in my age bracket (50s - 60s). Besides, these life-changing decisions tend to affect current friendships.
This is certainly a decade where a lot of folks are rethinking what it means to live well and have a secure sleeping place.
Once I took the plunge, I did not look back. Even now, I am typing this in my little sleeping capsule... I see myself as an astronaught leaving my tiny space ship each day. Whatever makes the transition feel smooth, I guess?
But the guys on here are right. It is a state of mind.

Once I figured out that I did not need a lot of space to sleep in, the rest was easy to build.

And we are all in various stages of this development. I just moved into my van myself and it is nothing more than a sleeping area to be honest.
I do all my food prep and eating outside the van... as well as my bathing.
That'll change when I get more funds to put into the project.

So welcome and good luck with your new lifestyle.
For an adventurous spirit, it is addictive and it really grows on ya.
