There's still access to some National Parks even though there's no trash pickup, restroom cleaning or rangers to enforce regulations. Here's a link to an article in the LA Times about the situation in Death Valley, Joshua Tree and Channel Islands where some visitors are acting responsibly, some volunteers are trying to keep things semi-functioning, but where some visitors should be thrown out.

I knew at least one of the things in your title applied to me, so had to come check this thread out.

Hope nobody gets hurt when the jerks run wild. Bravo to the people willing to do their share and some extra besides.

California has been slow to figure out what Arizona and Utah did last time. The states by footing the bill to keep the parks open keep tourism dollars flowing in at a rate well above what it costs for minimum maintance. Closing most parks is not enforciable even though many installed gates, due to private companies that operate in the park and private property that came in while open being legally accessable by the owners. Just to many legal battles the National Park Service can not afford to fight. It will take parks quiter a while to restore services back to where they were and most federal enployees will be paid eventually whether they work or not. Strange how our government operates! Rangers are still on duty but only respond in life and death situations and really not equipped to deal with mobs.
