99% of the time it is the flex hoses.  I would not replace the metal lines unless it is obvious that is the problem. JMHO

GM in a rust belt State?

Oh yeah, those brakes line rust out amazingly fast!!!

Take it slow, and try not to throw anything you will need.   I feel your pain just thinking about that "job"

DANG! You definitely dodged a bullet there.
This makes me wonder how many of us have rehearsed in our minds what to do if this happens while out in traffic? I think I'm going to condition my thinking to stepping on the emergency brake while steering towards the least path of damage if this ever happens to me.
This also brings home knowing what is around you at all times when driving in case you have to take evasive action.
While the E Brake won't stop you nearly as quick, it beats nothing at all.

for those in   the rust belt they make stainless lines now.
I think this upgrade should be highly recommended for every vehicle. I know a lot of rodders do this.
Cars destined for rust belt locals should have this made mandatory, as it is a safety issue. :(

replace your fuel line while your at it,,,,i feel for you, i used to live in mich.

This is an opportunity to upgrade.

Flush ALL your old brake fluid out of the system, master cylinder and all.  It is almost certainly contaminated with too much water.

A 93 would have used DOT 3 brake fluid.  Upgrade to DOT 4 or DOT 5.1, both of which have higher dry AND wet boiling points than DOT 3.  Gives you a greater safety margin when driving in mountains.

Do not confuse DOT 5 and DOT 5.1

DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 are based on ethylene glycol.  DOT 5 is based on silicone and is NOT compatible with the others and cannot be mixed with them.  The military uses it, and race cars and some people upgrade street muscle cars to use it, but I've heard there can be issues with the rubber seals.

Anyway, use DOT4 or DOT 5.1 (have read that DOT5.1 is sometimes labeled DOT4+)

I just replaced all of my lines with copper/nickel alloy tubing that will not rust. Cheaper than SS and very easy to bend !

I also replaced flex lines and yes they are the typical weak point/check first item.

Fluid squirting out of a section of tubing is a definite fail but consider how strong the rest of the lines are before just patching the broken piece (temp fix at best).

Brakes are THE most important equipment in any vehicle , make sure yours are 100%.

:) Good luck!  Can you work in your garage on a dry floor?  I hate sitting/laying on damp or rocky ground!

And there's also the option of relocating out of the rust belt. :D

But that brings up another point. Rust Belt residents should seriously consider shopping outside the Rust Belt for live-in vehicles.
