All the current evidence says that the virus that is causing the epidemic originated in China. But it got out of China through more than one route. This article summarizes the mutations the virus has accumulated on the way, which in turn tells us the paths through which given strains have passed. Extremely interesting if you're into this sort of thing. (I am.)

Well, I trust the New York Times, and also the Washington Post.

These are the sources listed for this article:

“Sources: Trevor Bedford, Sidney Bell et al., Nextstrain.org; Vaughan Cooper; Ana S. Gonzalez-Reiche et al., medRxiv; Nature; New England Journal of Medicine. Cahill-Keyes World Map projection by Gene Keyes.“

I find the genome mapping fascinating, and that scientists have been able to determine from sewer water in New York, I think it was, some 15,000 different people who had been infected.

I don’t remember the specifics on the latter, but 15,000 cases sticks in my mind, and that these came from cells shed into wastewater.

That whole knowledge base is way above my pay grade.

We all do the best we can and usually trust national institutions. Imo, that trust is dangerous. Do your homework.

Largest shareholder of NYT is Carlos Slim, a Mexican billionaire that, depending on current economic climate, has been world's wealthiest man.

The owner of the Post is Jeff Bezos, owns Amazon, also someone been richest person in the world.

Wiki on media bias: "Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman developed a propaganda model which purports to explain this bias. The common misinterpretation of this model is that all bias is conscious and centralized. The hypothesis is that the process is decentralized and operates as a confluence of factors, that includes the overt pressure from owners and advertisers, but also by the gradual internalization of the biases and values of the corporate owners, leading to self-censorship"

I love the forensic aspect of what's going on however it seems being mobile has me more focused on the societal dynamics.

I wasn’t offended.

There are many who mistrust mainstream media, but I trust certain news sources and we have to get our information from somewhere.

I don’t care who owns them, I care whether their information is well and thoroughly sourced, and credible.

I don't take everything I read as the whole truth because most news article are a brief summary written by a reporter. Information can become a bit cloudy in the process of writing summaries as well as being skewed to present the individual writers point of view about what they want the focus of the story to be.

When I was in college, well before the internet, I would go to the library and read a number of news sources: everything from the John Birch Newsletter (far right) to the Militant Worker (far left).  Two things I learned:
  1. Most news stories 'cherry pick' their facts, so it is important to read opposing views.  A lot of times knowing what they leave out is more important that what they tell.
  2. It is very easy to lie with pictures because most people take a picture at face value.

And so, we’re getting a bit far afield of the original topic, but I will say I’m a pretty critical reader and thinker, with an equally good bs detector, and I still feel pretty comfortable with the WP and NYT.

I read them every day online, also watch Governors Cuomo and Pritzker’s briefings, and interviews with Dr. Anthony Fauci whenever I can.

All of whom I believe are credible sources of information.

Not being an epidemiologist privy to all the bits and pieces, I have to get my information from somewhere.

Awesome find on that article on viral genetics. It's like detective work trying to figure out what happened, basically ppl with  a lot of global travel spreading it to those who stay around their home base but still go to the grocery store.

On media and bias: Critical thinking is important, when reading the various news reports, or even threads on here. People with the white male perspective have had a very different life experience (world view) than the rest of us.

I found an article stating that an earlier hospital case was found in France, with no China travel connection.
It would be interesting to know the genetic source of that one.

Here is a follow up paper based on study of patients in the Houston TX area this summer.   ~crofter

And a recent paper on the analysis early on in AZ. Quote from the article: “These results demonstrate the power of public health contact tracing and self-isolation following a positive test for stemming the tide of infections moving forward.”

Here is a case study for a person in Nevada who got it twice, due to different strains of the virus.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3099(20)30764-7/fulltext

Quote from the article: "...the patient was infected by SARS-CoV-2 on two separate occasions by a genetically distinct virus. Thus, previous exposure to SARS-CoV-2 might not guarantee total immunity in all cases. All individuals, whether previously diagnosed with COVID-19 or not, should take identical precautions to avoid infection with SARS-CoV-2."

I hope you have enjoyed reading up on all the science work that is going on to understand SARS Cov-19 virus. They have been busy.
