I think being a gas station cashier has a lot of benefits for those of us who want to enjoy a simple existence and still have a few bucks coming in.

I'm working in a small convenience store (8 gas pumps, pre-pay) close to home. There are some excellent advantages to this kind of work...

1) Little contact with the bosses - I am on second shift
2) Self directed - you just get a few simple tasks done, keep the books balanced, life is good
3) Fairly low mental stress - virtually no multitasking
4) Fun - never a dull moment. Most customers joke around a little
5) Highly portable job skills (making change, operating lottery, ID'ing people, fixing pop machines, etc.)
6) Can take a mini break whenever time allows
7) Low pay keeps me qualified for free Medicaid insurance through state of Iowa
8) You build relationships with the regulars
9) Anonymity... It's easier to keep your vandwelling lifestyle "under the radar"

Disadvantages

1) Low pay
2) Wierd, varied hours
3) No scheduled breaks - impossible to take a half hour lunch when working alone
4) Can be a little hard on the feet
5) Some customers are drunk, mean, or both...
6) Robberies (6 years combined experience - never happened to me on 2nd shift)

I've tried a lot of other things in the last couple of years and this is one of the easiest gigs in that pay range. Perhaps the biggest advantage is the lack of multitasking... I can't say enough there! Just one piece of advice... I've worked in high volume and lower volume stations. Low volume is a lot less stressful.

Has anyone done any gas station work (or currently does) ?
