I tried this experiment today using a Pyrex glass pan and lid.
The "load" was 16 oz of water.
Tried it for 2 hours and then added some insulation to raise the temperature.
It heats to just under 130*F in a few hours.
Adding a double glass at the top should help.
Hot enough for beans, soups, etc.

That's perfect for a steak using the sous vide method of cooking. Vacuum pack your cut of meat and fill the pyrex with hot water.Toss in your steak and viola. Great post!

Thanks for your kind words.

The experiment gave me some new ideas.

If I would use a little more insulation and perhaps a double insulated glass top, it may be possible to adjust the system to max out at 135* F without doing anything.
As it is, a few socks or a towel around the present setup may be all that is needed.
A metal loaf pan of the same approximate dimensions would be better because it would not be breakable and it could be used on a stove if there is no sun.
It is simple enough to try.
Everyday is an adventure.

P.S. I do my Sous Vide cooking without water. Only warm air and a plastic wrap is used.

Setup time 30 seconds.

Sun.

(There are 16 oz of water heated in it)

I've always kicked around the notion to put together a small solar oven type thing to heat up frozen microwave dinners without a microwave.

But I don't really wanna wait two hours for my dinner to cook.

:(

Put it out, go out, return, eat.

Alas, it's hard to do that, since the sun moves, and I wouldn't be there to make the necessary adjustments.

It lies flat.
No adjustment necessary,
Covered with plastic wrap, and it keeps bugs and rain out.

It'd have to be on the dash of the van, so it would get shadowed eventually.

And i doubt plastic wrap would keep the seagulls out.  ;)

Do the seagulls get on your dash?

Place it on the top of the van in a chicken wire box and it might just get you a hot meal.

OTOH Solar cooking may be an impossibility for you to consider.
