As much as I love nature and solitude I also experience an almost equal craving for culture, primarily art and music (symphonies).  For years I've been a member of the Art Institute in Chicago and can spends days wandering their collections and exhibits.  I'm experiencing a dearth of art here at the beach and will have to travel to find some

For those of you on the road who share this passion, how do you get your fix?  Just drive your home to the closest big city and stroll on up to the ticket window??

We really enjoy museums, art, history, just about anything really. Since we go to lot of museums we bought a NARM pass which has saved us a ton of money on admission prices - http://narmassociation.org/

You won't find the same quality of art in some of the museums as in the Art Institute in Chicago but they're still  interesting. If you get a pass watch the restrictions. Some are not valid for museums within a certain distance from the museum that issued the pass. Here's one doesn't have any restrictions. It's kind of expensive but if join as a Contributor you get free admission to over 400 gardens plus the 400 museums - http://www.winterthur.org/?p=717

We meander along and stop at the museums as we travel. Walmarts make a great overnight spot in cities so that's where we usually spend the night.

tonyandkaren - that is just wonderful, thank you!! I'll definitely buya membership when we hit the road. The AI has a similar plan but it only covers something like 16 other big museums and it is very pricy.

That's what I'm doing to get my fix here in FL, but sometimes I just have to wade into the real thing.  :D

my idea of culture is a ghost town or a rodeo. so I guess I am not qualified to answer. highdesertranger

Just a different kind of culture, that's all, I appreciate those sorts of things as well.

I always enjoyed the Natural Science museums when I was a kid. Still go now and then, especially in small out of the way places. If you're ever in Silver City NM, the local university has an awesome natural history museum.
