The museum is free too (but make a donation at the door). WORLD CLASS!!! Nice and cool on a hot day. Time it right and catch a Blue Angel practice, same as the real thing without all the traffic.

I happened to be there on the anniversary of the Battle of Midway, so there were all sorts of Navy brass with scrambled eggs on their shoulders giving speeches and walking around.  :)

Carrabelle was scenic, but small. We drove around a bit but decided to continue on. One parking area that might work for an overnight is here: 29.84873, -84.66385 , not far from a public restroom.

We found an excellent place that appears to be somewhat unknown. The Sopchoppy City Park Campground has about 10 sites in a public park with a boat launch, ball fields, children's playground and nature trail. There are restrooms, showers, rv dump and trash dumpster, and these facilities do not appear to be reserved for use by campers only, in other words, it looks like any park user may shower and dump for free. 30.05114, -84.4993 We stayed at the camp for $15 a night to use the AC to run a heater at night during the cold snap.

Sopchoppy is a very small town with two gas stations and a small grocery store. It is on the edge of the Apalachicola National Forest in an area with many beautiful, natural rivers. So for those who like to kayak or river fish, this is an excellent place to spend some time. National Forest boondockers should consider this area for low cost camping in a warm winter location (although it froze here for the last two nights).

There is a free campground with vault toilets, close to river access here: Woodlake Camp 30.02651, -84.56512 . All sites were occupied when we drove through to check it out. There are a number of forest roads which go through the National Forest and should be available for 14 day boondocking. We followed one and found a suitable camp for a few vans here: 30.04717, -84.5519 . This camp is in the middle of what is named "Alligator Swamp" on the map so keep an eye on pets and small children. There were some bugs, a screen tent would be a good idea, especially in warmer weather. The Alligator Swamp camp is less than 5 miles to Sopchoppy, and with the services available in Sopchoppy City Park, it should allow extremely cheap long term boondocking. A prime area for kayakers and river fishermen.

When I drove through Port St Joe, I stayed in the little pullout next to the jetty/fishing pier mentioned previously: 29.81422, -85.31102. IIRC A screen of trees and a low wall conceals vehicles from police spotlights or other undue attention, and people come and go all night on the jetty. This is one of my favorite areas in Florida, very peaceful and natural, though on warm nights put up the mosquito nets. ;)
