Kidde has an ongoing recall for extinguishers with plastic handles or push buttons. I checked all mine and found two that qualified, did the online registration and after a month or so had two new extinguishers delivered yesterday. I will now return the recalled ones in the same packaging using their prepaid label. Here is the link to the registration.

There are 142 extinguisher models that can be labeled under many other names than Kidde. Sears, Sam's, Costco, Montgomery Ward, Fuller Brush, Walmart... Dates affected go back to the 70's. So if you have a charged extinguisher with a plastic handle or push button you might be able to swap it for a new, safer model(#466112 $54 on Amazon).

Here is a link to the models affected, click "read full article".

it will not let me read the article unless I subscribe.

just an FYI those fire extinguishers with plastic handles and nozzles are throw away extinguishers. you can not refill them or service them.

I have a First Alert, model AD-193464, extinquisher with A-B-C rating, bought at Home Depot. FA is likely a totally different company from Kidde, and no FAs are listed in the recall, so an alternate way to go.

Good thing for post #1, :). I had checked this thing before my trip to AZ, but just discovered that the rip-away plastic strap had broken and the safety pin had fallen off the trigger. DUH! It's always something.
