Hi all,
I will be traveling to Crater Lake, Or in mid Sept then heading East and eventually into Az or NW for the winter. Any suggestions on good disperse camping locations and bad ones to stay away from.

Thanks,
FransVan

Welcome to the CRVL forums Fran! There are many places to camp in the southwest. I haven't run into many truly bad ones although some are admittedly better than others. Start here with freecampsite - https://freecampsites.net/ then ask on the forum about individual sites if you have any questions. Somebody here has probably been to most of them.

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips, Tricks and Rules" post lists some helpful information to get you started.

Most of our rules boil down to two simple over-riding principles: 1) What you post should provide good information (like your introductory post), and 2) Any response to someone else's post should make them feel glad they are part of this forum community.

We look forward to hearing more from you.

WHOOPS- I posted the following because when I left NM in late May the state was opening up some of their parks, but their website now says that no yearly camping permits are being issued. Too bad, because you could social distance very well dispersed camping in every NM state park that I visited. Maybe they will change their plans for snowbirds? Unlikely, but if they do it’s worth checking out.

Did you mean NM instead of NW? If so, and you can afford a NM State Parks yearly camping pass (and if they have opened most of their state parks, I don’t know) you might consider one. I like Heron Lake in the summer and Elephant Butte reservoir is quiet in the winter and has WiFi, too (although the signal is spotty and weak.) I forget the name of the reservoir just south of EB, but it’s even nicer and quieter, but no WiFi. Most of the NM state parks have showers, if you don’t have one in your rig. Those were a luxury for me. I should say that all of these campgrounds have dispersed camping along with regular sites. I always disperse camp away from others for privacy and peace.
