I've noticed that there's often a small amount of fluid atop my batteries around the caps - one or two little pools maybe fingernail size. Is this as result of the batteries gassing when approaching full charge or is it due to my driving like a maniac and bouncing my house around? Is it an issue?

Probably both. Tends to happen more when batteries are overwatered.

What's your max voltage?

Do not water a battery that half charged, unless the plates are exposed, then fill just to cover plates, then fully charge, then fill to 1/4 inch of the hanging arms in the cells.

Watering the depleted battery then charging usually causes splllage as the electrolyte expands with charge and temperature

It sounds normal. As SW posted be sure you are not over filling the liquid. I would check the amount of charging. You don't have to boil the cells every charge cycle.
