Came home from Mexico once with three kinds of gut infection, including e coli and salmonella.  Never been so sick in my life and am still dealing with the fallout five years later.
You're still suffering the effects five years later?

Yeah, it screwed something up with my gut bacteria (or the treatment for it did), so I have the runs most of the time.  If I take a ton of probiotics it gets better for a while, but they cost a lot so I only do that once in a while.

For some reason I got it on every anniversary I had. Never got it after the divorce, I wonder why sometimes.

You just need to wash them. Maybe with a spray bottle with water and a little vinegar in it.

One interesting thing if you are using raw eggs to make something is salmonella or e coli is on the outside of the egg, not the inside. If you dunk a raw egg into boiling water for about 30 seconds, it is safe.

Thanks for the tips. I knew I should have washed those grapes before I ate them. As a rule, I wash all produce I'm going to eat unless it's going to be peeled. I ate the grapes during the most frenzied part of my build-out. I was starving late at night and half-frozen. As I reached my hand into the bag, there was a slight pause, and then I said those ill-fated words to myself, "It will be fine. You're just being paranoid."

Two conclusions: Paranoid is good, and temperatures cold enough to freeze me aren't cold enough to kill E-coli.

I've always wondered what is actually effective for washing fruits and vegetables. I guess we never really know, but wash them for peace of mind. I had not thought about using my experimental dishwashing vinegar spray bottle on produce. I'll give that a try. Thanks.

Danny, bacteria is no longer just outside of the eggshells.  They've discovered that some hens are infected (I think it was Salmonella, rather than E. coli) inside their body where the egg is created, and they produce eggs with the bacteria INSIDE the egg. Just what we needed. :dodgy:

Salmonella inside eggs from the Center for Disease Control: https://www.cdc.gov/features/salmonellaeggs/

Sounds like something Monsanto would do.

But only if they can patent the bacteria and then once you get infected, sue you for intellectual property theft.

Yeah, those are the one's I'm talking about.

I've had it at least a couple times. The last one I remember was from smoked salmon. The one you buy in the deli part of a super market that comes packaged in plastic. I'm not 100% sure that was it, but 99.9% sure. I used to love that stuff, but haven't eaten it since. Thought I was going to die that night.

It sounds like you have/had a giardia infection. I got it once and it took me a few years to get rid of the digestive distress, cramps, gas, diarhea, lethargy, etc. - bad stuff. I got mine from drinking unfiltered water from a contaminated stream. Never do this, even though the water looks clean and clear! https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/giardia/index.html

One thing that sort of impressed me was that Walmart notified me which shows how close they track their customers. I order twice a month from them and like others have said, I don't buy any meat from them other than hamburger.

I've had food poisoning once and couldn't remember how soon it hit me. Got while on vacation with my four older kids to DisneyWorld. Fun trip.

Thanks Chip. I'm pretty sure it was the fish. After upchucking everything in my stomach, it was like a sudden relief.
As far as I know, giardia comes from contaminated water.  I'm usually really careful about what I drink.
On the lfirst page in the following pdf link, under Epidemiology, read the last sentence. YUCK!

Hah, seems pretty basic, eh? Years ago I read somewhere, (may have been Back Packer magazine) that the origin was most likely something defalcating in the water upstream from the victim. This is why I try and keep a good quality water filtration system handy.
