Is giving to charity donating if one deducts it on taxes later?

I started donating plasma in the early '80s while living in Orlando, FL. I still remember the very first time I did it, too. The whole process from start to finish took me about 6 hours but the process has come a long way since then. It also took a long time because there were a lot of people doing it, too. I do have scars on my arms but not as bad as others I've seen. I stopped doing it as I am a cancer survivor and once you have any sort of cancer, you cannot donate again. At least, that's what I was told but it may be different now.
