Re pooping ... I have a wide mouth thermos that I set on the floor of the Matrix behind the driver's seat for midnight pees. It's short and not tippy, and completely watertight / odortight. With the seat all the way forward I am small enough that I can crouch there. In a true emergency I could poop in that , maybe add a ziplok baggie for some easier clean up. ... beats going up on the roof. :)

Some "interesting" posts in this thread. Personally, I hold it until I get to a McDonalds or Walmart. I have never taken a dump in my van, but I guess I'm strange.

I keep a 5 gal pail and liner in my camper "just in case" I have an immediate urge I didn't plan on. This is my backup "position."

However, I strive to regulate my needs through eating about the same time each day, and establishing a daily bodily schedule as much as I can effect it. A daily shot of prune juice also assists in keep the trains moving on schedule.

My morning "constitutional" usually makes itself known around 10:00 am each day. I plan a stop at Walmart or McDonald's to take advantage of their "temporary camping facilities." Never found a restroom at either of these places I didn't like!

When I constructed my motorhome conversion I purposely did not include a bathroom. People often ask me why I did that. I addition to not wanting the upkeep and odor of a bathroom, I always add,

"I personally paid for a restroom to be constructed in every McDonald's in the US, that way I don't have to carry one with me!"

Ha!

With bucket: temporary stink.
Without bucket:  Permanent stink!

Sooner or later, 'the urge' comes and cannot be denied.

Not necessarily.  My Camco flushable camp-crapper doesn't leak a drop or a whiff of fragrance.
The only time you smell it is when you dump the lower tank, but Oh Boy do you smell it then!  :s

My strong preference would be to use public restrooms, but I usually have to go urgently immediately after getting up in the morning.

This is one big item that makes me very hesitant on striking out and dwelling in my vehicle. I have tried out the setting up of a portable folding frame toilet and it just will not fit. And I don't see how a bucket would work. Besides there will be no room to store it......and like a lot of other people on here, I don't want to poop in the vehicle. I can get by with peeing in a small wide mouth laundry detergent container, but that is a little tricky also. I keep thinking, that sooner or later there IS going to be an accidental mishap and or spill. Which could make living in there, unpleasant afterwords.
I do have the shower tent, but of course you have to be able to have that set up ahead of time.

I'm not on the road yet but the Escape is almost set up. The only place I have left to set anything up for number 2 is the front passenger foot rest area. I'm going to have to find a roughly 9" tall pan or pot, preferably metal, then cut a hole on a board to put over the top of it. Good thing I'm relatively young and limber enough to get into position...

Hopefully I won't have to use it too often. If I'm boondocking, I would just use a cat-hole. If driving, I can pull into any gas station. I'm not planning on living in a city.

Do you have enough headroom to put a plastic bag lined bedpan on the passenger seat?

That looks great. I've never seen that before. Where can I buy one?

LOL.. oh my, you MUST be young. That is a bedpan and it can be purchased at medical supply places (maybe even Walgreens??). Or go to Bob's blog part of this site and use his Amazon search. If you buy one from Amazon, a tiny part of the cost is given to Bob for the "referral" (costs you nothing extra at all).

you can sometimes find the bed pans cheap at military surplus stores. highdesertranger

Why do they call them Military Surplus, when most if what they carry is Chinese, Philippines, or Hong Kong made reproductions?   (Speaking of #2!)
