I'm living in Colorado and looking to buy a 2001+ Chevy van within the next couple months to live in FT. I've been looking over the insurance information on dmv.org but haven't quite found an answer to my question.

Do I need to pay commercial auto insurance or non-commercial auto insurance?

I am already self employed as a independent contractor (but in a totally different industry - i.e., not the construction industry) and will be using the van to travel for work and live in it but I don't need the van for like moving lumber or tools, etc in a commercial capacity.

This will be my first vehicle so I'm new to the whole process of buying, registering and insuring a vehicle.

I'm planning on going to my local dmv next week to find more information but I figured I'd ask here as well  :)

Thank you!

You don't need commercial insurance on a vehicle registered as a private vehicle.

Every state is a little different.  Depending on your vehicle's weight, the state may give it commercial plates.  You probably won't have any say in it. I have a Ford F250 and it has commercial plates even though I am not a business or anything like that.  Since this is your first vehicle, get price quotes from several insurance companies before you buy insurance.  They will want your vehicle's VIN # and they will use that to decide how much to quote you.

DO NOT tell them you will be living in it . RV insurance only applies if you have another daily driver in most states .

Won't insurance company want to know where the vehicle is garaged/stored?  what do you list as an address?  I only know from my personal insurance that they ask.

You're going to have to give the Dept. of Motor Vehicles an address to register it and get a driver's license.  That's the address you give the insurance company as well.
