Camp kitchen

I used a large butcher block board on the tailgate of my pickup and set the camp stove up there when I tent camped a lot. Before I put the big ladder rack on I had built a lightweight rack out of 2x3 lumber that extended 3 feet past the rear of the bed. Used a tarp over it and angled down and anchored. It worked pretty nice. My experiences with camp kitchens were when I was in the Boy Scouts decades ago. I liked how we could stow away everything and then just lift it up into the truck. Had plans to build another one for my pickup but life's direction changed and I ended up living in a semi truck sleeper.

I wish I didn't suck at woodwork or I'd build something like that for my van.   :p

Does 47 pounds, empty, seem like a lot for that first cabinet?

It's hard to tell in the photos, but it looks like the center shelf on the first design, doesn't close to keep things from falling out.

Yeah, 47 pounds sounds like a lot for that box. It seals up completely closed when you store it. I figure they made that middle shelf for stuff you use a lot so it is easy to take stuff out or put stuff in.

I like it a lot. I have a travel trailer but we cook outside, mostly. It would be great to store cooking stuff. Do you think 3/8" plywood would work to save weight?

Probably save quite a bit of weight.  Might want to use cleats around the perimeter where you screw everything together to keep it from splitting.  Lots of wood glue too.  That fella built it to accommodate that larger cook stove so that is probably where a lot of his weight is.

I know you posted these to give others ideas but this I noticed this one has an MSRP of $5500!  That's nuts!
Well you see all kinds of crazy pricing, plenty of millionaire wannabees aren't going to DIY and it's not a big market.

If you're pulling in hundreds of dollars per minute passive income why not, at least it's trickling down

I'd like to see one done in foam+screen+Glidden Gripper

Bet you could get empty weight down to under 15lbs.

The hardest part would be making it not look like a middle school shop project.

Former middle school shop teacher advises you use the paper bag coating method for looks!

Meh.

I'm thinking shooting for a really straight build, then a combination of fine wood veneer and padded leather.

Or maybe that floated epoxy faux granite, make it look like it weighs 800lbs then freak them out twirling the whole thing on my finger like a basketball
