That's been a scare tactic to keep people away from natural hot springs for decades. I think the number of cases averages much less than one a year. Worry about lightning strikes instead.

Like it or not, the world is a dangerous place. Our govt has attempted to remove certain dangers so everyone can be safe, and that is simply not possible. The result of this and our poor educational system is lack of critical thought, rationality and factual accuracy. Thinking is still necesary, but some people appear to have given it up: joggers wearing headsets (eliminating hearing as a defense), texting while walking in front of a moving bus, not considering cause and effect while doing risky things like driving at high speed in the rain.

The Park Service says they're putting up signs, but you know people will ignore them, and then try to fix the blame on someone else. We all still have to think, like it or not, or risk an early death, and all of the blame goes to the person who knew the risks and blew them off.

Like the motorcycle people say: There are old bikers and bold bikers, but there are no old, bold bikers.

I think it came up because one family recently lost their son to the parasite last month. It was in Florida

I hope to hear about brain eating parasites in a song, at the RTR, Spiff

All hot springs are extremely dangerous, especially for city dwellers and weekend warriors. </sarc> The more we can scare away, the better.

I went for a swim in Huckleberry Hot Springs a few weeks ago up in the Rockefeller Parkway. They already had a sign up at the trailhead warning of the parasites. Fortunately, they took down the sign for the springs trail, making it difficult for visitors to find. I had the place to myself.

just don't put your head underwater. this has been my practice for years. the little nasty's need to get in though your nose. highdesertranger
