Anyone been there and have suggestions on things to see and do. I hope to go there in mid to late April and camp in the backcountry campsites for a few days.

Be sure to stock up on groceries and gas. I've been to big bend 4 times.Mostly stay up in the Chisos basin area, higher elevation, much cooler. In my opinion the hiking trails are much better. Last trip I never left the basin, but there are no backcountry campsites (that i remember) just the main campground. there is also the lodge w/ restuarant visitors center, small store.

Big Bend NP is one of my favorites. I did backcountry camping last time I was there a year ago. Here are a couple of my blog posts that go into some detail.

http://suanneonline.blogspot.com/2012/02/big-bend-national-park-feb-2-11.html

http://suanneonline.blogspot.com/2010/05/couple-of-texas-parks-april-28-may-1.html

Last year the drought was taking it's toll. I hope they've received some moisture since then.

Enjoy ... it's a wonderful place!

Suanne

My favorite place on the planet! Chisos Basin is the best campground but you might also consider a few days in the Rio Grande Campground because there are several good hikes from there, all to different types of scenery. Sunsets are to die for. Lots of javelinas around--keep your pets inside when they are around and at night. They are cute and fun to watch! I'll post a few pics in my album here. Just give me a few minutes. Wish I were going there!!!

Hey guys, thanks a ton for the input. I'm really looking forward to this trip. Sent away for a Nat'l Geo map of Big Bend with all the backcountry campsites shown. I've got a 4X4 Tundra and shouldn't have any problems getting to these out of the way places. I've got a Leer commercial truck cap ordered and it should arrive in plenty of time to outfit it with my camping gear, etc. Will take plenty of groceries/water and be mindfiul of my fuel situation, as suggested by Gymrat. Loved the info and pics in your blog Suanne. Thanks. Great pics Mockturtle. If it's OK with you I'll rotate them as my wallpaper until I make the trip. Same with Suanne's pics.
